jumperless motherboards

This is a rant so excuse my while I defecate on your sensibilites

What is the advantage of a jumperless motherboards? Anandtech's recent article on the problem with overclocking with 133 FSb on Via kt133a boards that feature fusion of jumperless and junper filled features brought this home to me. I mean what is the advantage of a jumperles board. Unless, of course to be fodder for the capitalist giants that keep coming up with "new features" that only minimally increase performance but more importantly fill their pockets while we the automaton consumers keep consuming.

It's easier than jumpers? Especially for someone like me, I have extremely poor vision and it's hard for me to see the jumpers when it's inside my case so I have to take my motherboard out to swap cases.


The problem is when companies make it partly jumper and partly jumperless and then people try to use chips designed for 100Mhz FSB at 133Mhz FSB. This problem does not exist on a fully jumperless design, it's only when you have that 100 or 133Mhz jumper and jumperless multiplier control. If they'd just leave it fully jumperless then it would be fine.

For those who like to play around with overclocking and changing the fsb speeds. Beats the hell out of messing with jumpers.

I've got a question... why bother with motherboards that aren't jumperless?

convience mostly, it's also a bit safer. you see exactly what you're setting your cpu to run at, etc (not dealing with manuals and trying to figure out the right combination). if you do set it wrong, most good mobos will correct it for you and boot up at default.

Prefering a jumper board over a jumperless is like prefering a handcrank starting car over a key start!

It is harder to set up, harder to change, and easier to make a mistake, though perhaps easier to recover from a mistake. If you get it wrong, shut down, mutter curses, get the manual, magnifiying glass and try again. Vs shut down, mutter curses, clear CMOS, try again. hummm maybe not even better here still only one jumber vs ?

i like the convience but im also paranoid someone is going to get on my computer and be a wise guy and start messing with the fsb settings via softfsb other then that i guess theres no reason to have them anymore.. ***** off topic****** on the other hand with the advent of plug and play doing away with jumpers on perhferihals(spelling),ect im not as nuetral.. being a power user trying to fix a computer and windoze setting everything for me can get anoying at times........
