After reading all the great things about this from these boards and playing around with a i600m, I finally took the plunge and got a T40 237392U. I must say, wow, battery life is amazing. I got the 9-cell battery, the one that sticks a bit out from the back, and im so glad I got it. I barely notice or find any problem with it sticking out from the back. I ran it today doing things such as installing 2 games, couple restarts, using wireless internet to browse the net, listening to music in wimamp from files on my other comp in the network. Also I was downloading things all day and moving the laptop around to test wireless at the same time. I started at 2 oclock today and im writing this at 8:10 tonight. Went through an entire day doing all this without even moving away from the computer and got over 6 hours which im pretty impressed with. I remember trying to do this with my i600m and never got near this type of battery life.

So far im loving the design of the latop. It's thin, light, and I think it looks great. One my main concerns was the heat and during the entire day of playing around with it, it barely got warm. The top side where the keyboard armwrest is remained completely cool. Theo only part that got even slightly warm was the bottom of the laptop near the left side and even then I could barely notice it. The fan was pumping out cool air all day and im quite happy with it so far.

Im trying out Everquest right now. The system runs it really good, better than I was expecting. This game is pretty memory, cpu, graphic intensive during raids and so far its running it really well. I noticed when I played the game the laptop goes get warm underneath but not enough to conern me or bother me all that much.

So far im loving the think light and tried it in a dark room and found it really nice. Also, the utilities that come with this allow you to turn on and turn off almost all the pieces of equipment in the system which I found nice. The thing I like about the utilities on this system is they don't seem to bog the system down but when I had the i600m, it came with stuff that noticebly lowered the system performance.

I've read hear and heard about people having problems with noises when the AC adaptor is pluged in. Mines plugged in right now and I'm not hearing any noise whatsoever even with my ear to the notebook.

So far im just very happy and relieved that this notebook is build so damn good. I tried pushing really hard from the back of the screen and can't even get the lcd to show any distortion. When I tried this with the 600m, if I simply touched it a bit a ripple would appear. Also when moving the screen up and down no distortion appeared in the lcd either.

All I can really say is this system is amazing. I got it through an employee I knew at IBM but even if I had to pay more I would easily do it. My only question is what's the best way to clean the screen. I accidently touched it and now there is a small smudge from my hands so what's the best way to clean it? Btw, no dead pixels or anything =). Just want to say thanks to everyone for posting saying how wonderful this notebook is, I am now a firm believer too =D.

Aye, I'm going to be buying one here pretty soon too. I also once owned a 600m, and man I can't handle that kind of crap.

Luckily I too get a massive discount on the T40.

Huh? I didn't think the fan was on much on the T40, only during intensive tasks. How noisey is a T40? I am looking to replace my R30 (damn noisey when the fan starts) with a T40 sometime this fall, and I want a quiet laptop, which is what I thought the T40 was. Some people say the fan is not on much, others that the fan is almost always on.

I cant speak for the person who started this thread, but on my T40 the fan was blowing alot at first I live in an unairconditioned home and gets pretty warm around here. I noticed however that even when the fan is blowing its very very quiet.
Also I purchased a Targus cool pad and that made a big difference for the T40 much much cooler running now the fan hardly blows and if Iam in an airconditioned building without the cool pad thefan again hardly comes on at all.

whats a targus cool pad? How does it work and reduce heat? does it go under the laptop? I'd lik to find something
very small 1/4" to put under laptop just to let it breathe a bit more althoug I know the vent is on the side.

When the fan isn't on I can feel cool air coming out from the side of the notebook. It's not like a wind when the fan is running, it's very small and I can only feel it when I put my whole hand against the side of it. The only time I can hear the fan come on is when I first start the comp or when I run a game. When the game is running it get slightly warn underneath and the air coming from the side is warm. The fan is very quiet and doesn't bother me at all. Someone sitting beside me could not hear the fan running so it's not too loud.

Phew, thanks for setting that straight. And the part about the AC adaptor, seems like they fixed that.

Congratulations on your Thinkpad. I have been a believer ever since I got the R30. Which, despite it being the value Thinkpad, is very nice (except for that stupid fan) and well built. Actually I am having trouble understanding how a notebook can be built any better, but I will know in a few months.

Umm... Actually the fan is on when you feel any air coming out the vents. The fan can run at multiple speeds. I have a T40 and the fan runs almost constantly at low speed and is seriously almost dead silent. It only speeds up when running video intensive programs (not even for CPU intensive programs!). It is an amazingly quite fan. The T40's loudest is quieter than my old Inspiron 8200's fans at low speed.

BTW, I've had my T40 for about a month and it's by FAR the most impressive laptop I've ever worked with. I can't think of a single thing I'd change. It's the closest I've seen to perfection. Though I've been less than impressed with the battery life. It's rated for like 4.7 hours and I only got 2:45 under moderate usage. BTW, I have the standard battery.

2:45 until it hit 10% or 0%?

I can get close to 1 hour out of it from 10% to 0%. did you disabled speedstep?

2:45 from 100% till it went to sleep. Speedstep is enabled though I had the LCD at full brightness. I'm beginning to wonder if I got a defective battery. The first time I used it, it seemed to work fine. The second time it got down to about 60% then windows said it was getting ready to go into standby and it just died (shut off instead of going into standby). I turned it back on and the battery reported it was at 100%. After it got down to around 50% it instantly dropped to 3% and went to sleep.

Call ibm anyway, you paid for it...also, I remember seeing 1-2 updates from IBM's website specific
to the battery program...

Their are several updates available for the t40 and t40p at:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-46258

You can also go to:

1 - start
2 - programs
3 - access ibm
4 - ibm update connector

***IBM has told me this feature is not really that accurate so keep that in mind. Better to
do any updates manually one at a time if you really need it...Also, learn about ibm's rapid
restore and microsofts restore system before you start downloading updates and drivers.
Just a word of advice...Beyond this, this is such a great laptop and the support second to
none.
