Lemme just say WOW, my system is pretty much silent right now. For reference

A64 3200+ Newcastle w/XP-120 & Enermax 120MM fan
SuperLanBoy Case w/stock 120MM fans
Antec TruePower 430W
2x80GB WD HDD's
BFG 6800GT, previously w/blue LED heatpipe HSF

Before, starting my comp sounded like a jet taking off; those stupid little fans were so high pitched and loud.

Now, I can mainly only hear the HDD's.

But question: the temps seem to be high. Its idling in the mid 60's C. Haven't tested load, but the idle seems high to me. I searched around and can't seem to find a 6800GT w/NV5 idle temp near that. Is that high?

Also, what might be partially causing it is one of the mounting studs broke off during tightening But there is NO play between the board & cooler, so it should be getting optimal contact. The other three screws are on there perfectly. I used Ceramique on the core & mem. Should I get another NV5 and try that? Thx!

no need to get another one...try increasing the RPM of ur fan....60 idle is about 10C above average but nothing really to worry about...do check though how much its during load!

My 6800Ultra Idle's around 54, and under load I havent seen it get past mid 60's...and thats using stock vid card cooling. 1 120 in front, 1 120 in back and 1 80mm on side, plus the one in my psu.

I have installed 3 NV5's One broke like you mentioned. That was my last one I had. Did some research and found info on the Zalman GPU cooler line for the nVidia 6800 series.

Sounds like it's not getting full contact with the GPU. And I would not run that card with the NV5 if that's broken. Get youself a new cooler. Check out the Zalman VF700-Cu or the Zalman VF700-AlCu

Here:

Zalman

I went with the Zalman VF700-Cu it was easy to install, great contact with the GPU and I didn't have to worry about those mounting studs breaking.

Seems a little high. Make sure it is making good contact. I know with my 6800 GT I had to buzz a littel bit off the voltage regulator heat sink to make good contact.

Did some testing with that Real Time lighting program or whatever and it hit like 87 C under load :Q
These temps seem to be about the same or slightly higher than what I remember from the stock fan

It looks to be good enough for now; functional but not the best cooling
I think when I get a chance I will get a replacement, maybe AC will swap it out for me

Thx for the suggestion on the Zalman Midas, but I do like how the AC covers the RAM and helps ventilate the case better

My 6800GT idles around 65 and goes up to 85 when under load.

Will the Zalman VF700-Cu cool it better, and will it work on my 6800GT? I have the EVGA 6800GT PCI-E version.

Thankx.

Well, this thread was very timely as I have just installed my VF700-Cu in my Dell 8400. I have the 6800 GTO with pipes and shaders unlocked and OCed to 402/1101. Prior to installing the VF700-Cu my idle temps were right at 60C. I ran 3dMark05 default options (3 repeats, no CPU tests) and had Riva Tuner running in the background logging temps. Without the VF700-Cu I had an average temp of 81.4C and a maximum temp of 86C. Now with the VF700-Cu installed, I have idle temps of 50C and repeating the same 3dMark05 tests I get an average temp of 66.0C and a maximum temp of 69C. This is running the VF700-Cu at 12 V.

I am expecting these temps to drop a bit as the AS5 settles in.
