Just installed ubuntu Fiesty Fawn

what can I say... I like it!

Still need to get wireless working... bah...

You know, that is really the only true problem with linux distros. Some stuff will just never work straight out of the box without vendor support. BAH! makes me so angry...

But otherwise, REALLY liking it!

edit: only running Ubuntu on this machine... I have a G4 mac mini as "backup"

I have edgy on my laptop, but I got lucky because it has Centrino and thats supported in Ubuntu OOB.

I installed it last night on my laptop (Viao FRV-37).. It kicks a**. Everything works upon boot. No config needed for wireless card, display, sound or controls. Had Vista on it previously which ran great surprisingly. Just couldn't get the wireless card to stay connected.

Feisty Fawn includes some improved wireless support. It's not perfect yet, but it's coming along.

Even if stuff doesn't 'work out of the box' it's usually only a little effort to get it to work well. Just got to identify the chipset of the device and usually there is a howto on how to get it working well already out there.

Although having it 'just work' is very nice.

Feisty picked up my Atheros and RALink cards on boot.

EDIT: Oh, and my Zydas and prism usb devices are identified too, but I haven't tried them.

So did you install Herd 6? It was supposed to come out 2 days ago. I'm being patient for the Final to come out. It's unfortunate about the wireless support - no matter how good Ubuntu gets, I will still have to jump through hoops to get my old notebook with Broadcom wireless to work. Though those hoops have become incredibly easy to jump through as of late.

does anyone know how feisty fawn is coming along in terms of polish? Edgey, due to the extra time on dapper (which made dapper come out nice IMO) , was a little more rushed and there was some initial problems. Does feisty have any weird major bugs? I keep trying to get myself to wait 2 weeks till AFTER release date...but I just might have to start that torrent up the night it comes out

Well, I got wireless working. Apparently it doesn't like unadvertised SSIDs. I just told the router to broadcast, and viola... it worked.

Only a week? Hm...well..it's worth a shot but it's odd that you'd have a problem so far in.

I'm a die hard Gentoo fan, and always have been since I started using linux, but Ubuntu is a damn nice distro. I don't think anything, at least, for me will ever beat Gentoo as a server, but as a desktop ubuntu(actually Kubuntu for me), is really giving it a run for it's money. Especially with the slow downward spiral Gentoo seems to be in...
