Just ordered my N95

So after months of debating, I've taken the plunge and ordered the N95 for $488 on Amazon. I got the N95-3, because it seemed like a waste of money to spend another $250 on 8GB of memory. Speaking of which, I ordered an 8GB microSD card to go with it, even though the phone is only slated to work up to 2GB, I read several reports online saying that it works with 8GB cards. Anyone have any experience there?

Congrats. I spent a while messing around with an N95 and a bit more time staring at the Buy button at Amazon. $488 is a good price. Are you going to use it with AT&T? With 3G?

I'd be really interested in hearing your impressions after you get the phone and play with it a bit.

Unfortunately no 3G. I'm on T-Mobile, but my contract with them is up in a couple of months so I could switch (since when they start their 3G later this year, it will be on a different band that the N95 won't support, or so I hear).

I'm pretty excited for it - the big draw was the GPS, I just moved across the country so having GPS at my fingertips is a huge plus. Not to mention the internet, camera, and media capabilities...I had a Dash, it did the job just fine, but kicked the bucket. Went to T-Mobile and bought a Curve, it was nice, an upgrade from the Dash, but for a phone 2 years newer and considerably more expensive, it didn't really do it for me. So N95 it is....supposed to get here tomorrow

Yeah, you are right. T-Mobile (which is my carrier too) will be deploying 3G UMTS on the AWS 1.7GHz spectrum and pretty much nothing available right now will be on that section of spectrum, since FDD AWS at 1.7GHz/2.1GHz is a US-only thing and even in the US it's not operational yet. The rumor is that T-Mobile will deploy 3G this summer... but it's been rumored that T-Mobile USA would be deploying 3G pretty much 6 months ahead of any given point since they bought the spectrum in the AWS auction in 2006.

I presume they'll have devices lined up for the roll-out, but I wouldn't think they'll roll out with anything impressive like an N95... when they get around to turning 3G on.

Current rumor - summer 2008.

Two of my co-workers have them and swear they are the greatest cell phones in existence. Whenever anyone with an iPhone starts talking about the wonders of the iPhone, one of the two will chime in with a list of things that are better on the N95.
I've been in a couple of meetings where they de-rail things to pass their N95 around the table.

Each to their own...

how does the web browsing work on this thing? is not having a QWERTY board annoying? can you get a small keyboard for it?

Purely anecdotal, of course, but that is the result of three owners I know personally. One now has an iPhone, one a Blackberry 8120 and the other is waiting to get off contract to buy pretty much anything with a battery.

So I'm a couple of weeks in now. Love the phone so far. The features are fantastic - the GPS is great (especially when tied in with other apps like Google Maps or Nokia Sport Tracker). Web browsing is great. The browser is much better than what the Dash or the Curve offered, both the built in and the downloadable Opera. I personally don't like mini-QWERTY keyboards - I can type faster with a keypad + T9 any day, so not having a keyboard is no problem for me (although it supports bluetooth keyboard if you really want one).

Pretty much the only beef is the email program - it just isn't very powerful. For whatever reason it will only download headers, and doesn't give me the option to download the whole message automatically, so after it tells me I have mail I have to connect and download it. Plus there is no option to display it as HTML email, not that I can find anyway.

All in all, great phone so far.

Still have it. Still like it. In fact, with recent firmware updates, it's even better.
