left field, perhaps, but do you really think that the millions of scientists around the world (who are all much smarter than you) are wrong about global warming?

Millions?

Umm, yeah, 3-10 million in the US alone, depending on how strictly you define "scientist".

I'm not claiming that all scientists agree about global warming, but almost all will agree it's a real effect, one way or the other.

115 isn't uncommon for summer. When I was younger, I recall it getting about that hot (around 12 years ago). Last year it wasn't very warm here.

I'm sorry but 115 is extremely uncommon temps in my area. I've lived here my whole life and I don't think we've had temps here like that since the drought of '93, even then I believe that was only in the hundreds...

Humans didn't evolve from monkeys.

Humans and monkeys and apes evolved from a common primate ancestor. All evolved seperately into what we see today.

I am actually surprised california is getting that hot. I would expect Texas to be much hotter, but here in SA top temperature has only been about 104.

3 to 10 million scientists and engineers and most of them are probably something other than a climatologist, so probably aren't decently qualified to have an expert opinion on this subject

Yes, the summer heat in California can be directly attributed to global warming!

Whereas all the people in this thread have their PhD's in climatology?

"Expert opinion", maybe not, but when we're discussing scientific issues, I think even a scientist speaking outside of his or her specialty tends to be right more often than some random yokel with an axe to grind. You can't study a scientific field without picking up a little knowledge about the rest of science, as well as the scientific method.

This is another of those subjects where you either belive it or you don't, and no matter which side you're on, the other guy is a stupid moron, an enviro-killing pig,and most likely, a tool of (a) the environmental hippies, or (b) big business .
Both sides get pretty heated in their arguments for/against, and can drag out dozens/hundreds/thousands/millions of scientists to support their side.
While I personally believe that human interaction is indeed headed towards causing global warming, bu polluting the air, creating less clear air, and killing off forests and coral reefs, (all tied together in the generation of oxygen) I haven't seen any solid evidence either way YET.. However, look at the Kahleeforneeya & Houston, Texas smog. THAT can't be good for the environment. It doesn't just magically disappear. It goes SOMEWHERE, and it only makes sense that over time, the levels of pollutants will increase, since they DON'T just disappear...

people in this thread are using a heat wave as their evidence of global warming

but if it wasnt for people like that i wouldnt make as much money

im so conflicted

I don't think that what I am experiencing in SoCal is just a heat wave. Never (in at least the past 40-50 years) has this part of SoCal gotten this hot and this humid (over 60%) even during the summer.

Going from summers that peaked in the 90's to 115, hmm, that can't possibly be unusual right? no of course not, must be something else... something completely normal, oh wait, can't think of it, hmm....

Let's make this easy:

Hmmm... Believe the status quo and it's corporate mouthpieces or neutral scientics worldwide and observable fact? That's a tricky one...

As for proving evolution, care to explain the different races of humans in the world? Subtle skin changes and other characteristics that happened in the last 6000 years? We share our DNA, but wow, there sure are a lot of physical differences that didn't happen in the last 50, 100, 200, 500 years... Seem to be a evolution... Over a LONG period of time.

Not magic... Sorry...

I haven't seen the movie.. but there was a really interesting article from Michael Crichton on global warming titled aliens are the cause for global warming.
You should read the article if you plan on watching the movie.
The article basically argues that the evidence for global warming is akin to evidence for aliens. That is, for aliens there is the drake's equation, that shows all the variables to there being aliens. However, one does not know how much of each variable would actually prove anything. Thus those variables doesn't mean anything. The same thing works for global warming. We know carbon dioxide, CFC's, pollution, and what not, causes global warming. But we have no idea if the amount we're putting out right now actually has any noticeable effect.

Like I said, 25-30 years ago the temps were lower than normal and all the agenda based scientists were screaming the coming of the second Ice Age. Were they wrong then?...or now? The global thermostat does not react like the one on your wall. It takes a while for corrective action to kick in. Get back to me in 20 years, let's just see what happens.

Global warming seems to be something that most people don't have any grasp on. That's why some people are switching to the term "climate change."
"Global warming? It's cold out right now, it's not getting warmer. Global warming is fake!!!"
Global warming is talking about an increase in worldwide average temperatures of 1-2 degrees Fahrenheit!!!!
So it's still going to be summer or winter or whatever season, but the average overall temperature is still higher. It's like in your home. One room might have an air conditioner, and another doesn't. If you're sitting in the warm room, and the air conditioner's compressor breaks, well hey, you won't feel any difference, but the average temperature of the house is going to increase.

The problem with this small increase is the oceans. The oceans have about 139,480,000 square miles of surface area, though that assumes a perfectly flat surface. It's actually larger, given that your average ocean surface is rippled and wavy. Increase the temperature over that entire area by a degree or two, and you will get a lot more water evaporating into the air a lot more quickly than the planet's accustomed to. More water in the air means more clouds, and clouds tend to bring with them precipitation as well as sometimes violent weather. This can also cause unpredictable weather, such as 70 degree weather in January when it should be in the low 20's, or unseasonably cool summers. Odd weather patterns can also include oddly violent storms, such as recent flooding rains that brought more than 10" of rain to parts of New England, or the heat wave in California. Other areas can experience extreme drought.

Granted, climate changes can be natural too. According to this, (and other publications, this isn't the first time I've seen this), the Sahara was converted from desert to a temperate, habitable area about 10,500 years ago due to heavy rain.

A timeline of Sahara occupation [See Map]:

* 22,000 to 10,500 years ago: The Sahara was devoid of any human occupation outside the Nile Valley and extended 250 miles further south than it does today.

* 10,500 to 9,000 years ago: Monsoon rains begin sweeping into the Sahara, transforming the region into a habitable area swiftly settled by Nile Valley dwellers.

* 9,000 to 7,300 years ago: Continued rains, vegetation growth, and animal migrations lead to well established human settlements, including the introduction of domesticated livestock such as sheep and goats.

* 7,300 to 5,500 years ago: Retreating monsoonal rains initiate desiccation in the Egyptian Sahara, prompting humans to move to remaining habitable niches in Sudanese Sahara. The end of the rains and return of desert conditions throughout the Sahara after 5,500 coincides with population return to the Nile Valley and the beginning of pharaonic society.

Climate change can happen naturally. And it can have considerable consequences on human lifestyles. Given that, if the planet is already moody, it seems like a bad idea to provoke it further. Sure, human life will go on just fine, but if sea levels do rise, many people will be displaced. If weather patterns shift, areas that are currently good for farming may become unsuitable for it.

If you don't think those scientists are following the $$$ just like the corporations, you are deluding yourself. Scientists & researchers will do almost anything to suckle at the government teat.
