Just the PSU missing

Hi!

My build so far consists of:

  • i7 4770k
  • GTX780
  • some 16GB of RAM
  • Asus Gryphon - thanks cadaveca!
  • temjin tj08-e
  • Samsung 830 256GB + 1,5TB green

What I need is something to power this build.
I'm going to overclock (not l2n or anything that extreme, closed loop water).
It's a small case since I need portability and a modular PSU is a must in my opinion.
The max lenght should not be over 160mm.

Rosewill Capstones are too long, they range from 163mm to about 170mm

Here's the unit for you: Silverstone ST55F-G $100 AR, 140mm deep. The efficiency and size are perfect for a compact high end rig. Fully modular. 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe connectors are provided - hopefully your 780 is standard in that regard

I object to the Gold efficiency unit because it'll pretty much never be able to pay for itself in power savings over a Bronze efficiency one.

You can get a 500W modular one from Corsair (160mm deep) for $40 after a MIR, or if you really want to be safe on length, a 500W Silverstone Strider for $40 plus shipping after a MIR. The Corsair makes the Bronze rating and the Strider makes the basic 80+ rating.

Well, 140mm is better than 160mm, and the Silverstone is not only fully modular but more powerful on the +12V and the Gold efficiency is not just about saving electricity but also about lower noise and heat - which can be important in a cramped case. I agree it's gonna be more expensive in the long term, but it's not like other choices in his rig are attempting to maximize bang for buck, either.

Hehe, what gave it away, gtx780?

After long consideration, I said that I'm going to get a Seasonic platinum 660W. With it's 7 years warranty, I'm sure it'll pay off itself, mostly at least.

I wouldn't count on it. What are the chances that the unit will require RMA during the period between 5 and 7 years from now?

Anyway, I would like to know what shops you use specifically and how much you're paying for the Seasonic.

That is ridiculous. 150 eur for a 650W unit?! No one in their right mind would've recommended you to actually buy that unit. It is a great unit no doubt, but it is not worth what it costs.

I'd get Corsair HX-650 Gold 110€. The only differences of significance are efficiency and the number of cables, and these are really minor ones. You lose two PCIe cables (you're not gonna go SLI/CF on microATX), and a percent or two of efficiency. Just like the Seasonic it has modular cables, 7 yr warranty and semi-passive fan operation. It's 160mm deep.

Thanks for setting me on the solid ground, though people've mentioned getting a cheaper PSU before. I don't have any experience with PSUs, always bought the cheap ones, so I was thinking about spending more on this one.
