The bottom line is that handguns are not very good at killing people. The advantages of 9mm (much larger ammo capacity, faster follow up shots) outweigh the slight increase in damage done by the .45.

Not to mention that .45 ammo costs like 50-75% more than 9mm.

Only weiners choose 9mm over.45acp. Besides best self defense handgun is a 410 revolver!

And now I want to buy a pistol. I have always wanted a Glock for some reason and I am wanting a G23. I dont want a full size or subcompact. What are your favorites and what about your suggestions?

if you like the 23, buy it. Its a very solid gun. I personally don't like the muzzle flip on .40, so I'm sticking to 9's from here on out.

The 23 is very concealable. Its a perfect size for someone with larger hands that doesn't do well with a 27. You cannot go wrong with any Glock. They hold their value very well, so in case you do want to upgrade you can always sell for almost what you paid for it.

Don't be afraid to buy used. Gen 3 is a better bet right now until they get the Gen 4 bugs worked out. But I'm not sure if the 23 is available in Gen 4 yet.

I carry a 26 and after trying a few others, I'm sticking with it. I like how very concealable it is. I also like how dead nuts accurate it is. Paired up with night sites, an extra mag or two filled with Gold Dot +p ammo and I can't imagine carrying anything different.

I'd really like to pick up a 17 for range use but those things hold their value better than Macs. Its tough to find even a 5 year old 17 for under $400.

Glock is where its at. They will fire any bullet without issue. They are easy to clean and maintain. Hell...most Glock problems come from over cleaning. You shouldn't do anything more than clean the barrel, clean the action, couple VERY small drops of lube along the slide and that's it. If you do more, you are causing problems.

This will be my first handgun and will mostly be for home defense and going out shooting with friends. Do most gun shops let you try them out first? In my town we have just a little shop with no range and the old guy is crazy. I shot my friends 9mm and subcompact .380 today. The .380 had crazy recoil and was way to small for my hands. The 9mm felt good since it was full size. What would I be looking at as the difference of price between the 9 and 40?

I already know I am going Glock since I know how reliable they are and how they hold their value but I am open to the caliber I select. I know my wife will never shoot the thing because she wants something small due to her being very small.

And lets try to get this back on topic but thats for the post so far. Been a good read.

Your name is sixguns and you don't already own a gun, much less a wheel gun?

I do own a shotgun but my wife has never wanted/allowed me to get more. But since her crackhead little brother is getting bold with his stealing, she wants something here in the house.

So he can steal it?

OP:

Any compact from the big manufactures will be a good choice. Just ask your self if you think any features/options are necessary. Safety, no safety, mag safety, loaded chamber indicator, picatinny rail, adjustable sights, etc etc.

You mean the Judge? Pretty much every test I've seen shows that .410 loads are inadequate as a defensive load when fired from it.

Sure, birdshot out of a 3" barrel isn't going to do shit. I don't know about you though, but I would not want to be shot with 000 buck at <7 yards.

I like the Judge, and it will probably be my first revolver purchase.

As long as it has a safety its good. Dont really plan on buying a lot of addons maybe just a few more mags and thats it.

No him so much as his crackhead friends. Her mother made her so paranoid over the years and even though we have an alarm system and plan on getting cameras installed soon, she wants something else at home.

Personally, I'd prefer not to be shot by anything larger than an airsoft gun. That doesn't mean that a CO2 pellet gun is effect for defense. Sorry, but from everything I've read the Judge produces really large shot patterns and seriously lacks penetration even when using buckshot.

If I lived in serious snake territory I'd probably consider one for anti-snake duties... but against threats on 2 or 4 legs? Meh.

Glocks don't offer a physical on/off thumb safety, just an FYI. Sure they have the "If you drop it like a moron, it won't go off" type safety, but I like having a true safety.

The judge works best when you use it for pest control and then load it up with .45 LC for man stopping duty.

.410 Buck isn't adequate but .45 LC sure as hell is.

.40 ammo is going to be about 20-30% more expensive than 9mm. Not sure about the price difference for the actual gun.

If it's your first gun you want the 9mm. The recoil is much more pleasant than .40

I have a SR40 which due to its low bore axis is a very soft shooting for a 40. Its has about as much much recoil and muzzle flip as my 92FS.

The argument about 9 vs 40 vs 45 is pointless. Shot placement is more important than caliber size.

I have an M&P 45 and was thinking about a M&P 40c next which you can get a conversion barrel, 9mm mag and shoot 9mm through it. Shoot 9 and carry 40.

Of course firing 9mm in a gun made for .40 isn't reliable because of the case head size difference.

That's why I think 10mm is good choice since the .40 cartridge is based on 10mm with a slightly shorter case, and .357 Sig is just a necked down .40. So the case head dimensions are the same for all three. No extraction or ejection problems like when trying to fire a 9mm with a .40 slide.

The Glock has a "true" safety and you must disengage it every single time the weapon is fired. Please don't spread misinformation regarding things you don't understand.

Glock pistols do NOT have a "true" manual safety toggle switch of the type he was referring to. Please don't spread misinformation regarding things you don't understand.

I don't know why people always say this. I'm pretty weak-handed and I've never noticed a recoil difference between .40 and 9mm. Theres a very slight difference at .45 and .357, but even then hardly much at all. IMO, the difference between .38 special and .357 mag/.45 is so small that if you can't comfortable shoot at LEAST .357/.45, you shouldn't be shooting.

I shoot a .357 quite often and am decent with it. I just dont like the hard trigger pull of revolvers. Recoil really isnt a big deal since I am a rather big dude. I think I may end up going G19 or G23 on cost alone. When I was at the store today, I saw a bunch of 9mm ammo but no .40. That might be a reason to go 9mm.
