how much would someone need to oc to need phase change cooling?
just curious, not considering anything

I would say quite a bit... probably a good 250-300+ MHz? I'm no OC expert though, so don't take my word on this, it's just an educated guess.

There are a few guys out there hitting 4+ GHz with 3GHz P4's on air...A few...I had a sweet DO stepping 3Ghz Prescott that hit 4 on air with acceptable temps.

With that kind of overclock most people will go with watercooling...Phase change is a step up...I have another DO stepping P4 that I have never overclocked and am considering going with a phase change Swiftech kit...Just cant decide if I want to sell it and move to AMD for another hot rod box.

Intresting read.

It's not about the actual MHz OCd... it's about the percentage of OC over default.
A 200MHz Pentium would be cranking with a 250-300MHz OC, but a 3.2 Northwood could do that much without a breaking a sweat.
It's all about the % OC'd

they would have to have a pretty rediculous overclock. maybe over 50-60%

It depends, if your OC'ing on water and wanna bump the voltages even more to get more stability and mgz...then go for it...

Yeah, you're quite right. It all depends on what speed the CPU is to start with.

I actually forgot about the P4 2.8C I used to own, which I was running at 420 MHz above stock (24/7), on stock air cooling, with virutally no increase in temps.

I've heard of having to take such measures when fitting a phase cooling system, but not with watercooling... Oh well, thankfully I've never fit a watercooling system to my rig (especially if it entails so much effort).

Ayeaye aye. Bunch of wrong info here....

Swiftech uses TEC as their most advanced cooling system. That's Thermo Electric Cooling...not Phase Change. TEC is a step up from watercooling and requires more money than watercooling (a pelt(tec itself and a dedicated PS). Phase Change is the process of a gaz changing states, liquid and gas, there the name Phase Change. Most commercial and well known units are Vapochill and Prometia. You can get guys in specialized forums to get you one built for much cheaper and get even better result.
