Since it's a Compaq and originally had a K6-233 I doubt you could put anything faster than that in. You'd have to check so see if the board you have supports voltages in the range of 2.2-2.4 volts. Anything above a 233 in the world of AMD needs that lower voltage. Otherwise you'd have to by a Powerleap CPU upgrade which is more money than it's worth. AMD is your only route since Intel didn't release a Pentium MMX chip faster than 233 on the PC arena. And yes, Intel did produce mobile Pentium MMX 266mhz and 300mhz CPU's that weren't PII based. In case anyone was wondering.

I had heard about the 266 ,but not the 300 ,what socket did they use? was it still S7?

I believe you could upgrade to a K6-2 400Mhz easy. All you do is set the settings to 2x66Mhz FSB. I know it sounds crazy but the 2x is the same as 6x with the K6-2. With that old MB this maybe is the best you can do and still be stable. You can get a K6-2 450 at TigerDirect.com for $45 + 10 shipping. It is OK to underclock it. Do not get the K6-2 plus, it will not work. This would be a great upgrade for you because it is cheep. You do need to get the MB settings first and if you post all the info on your system we can help you with that too.

what Radman suggest is a good idea... make sure the mobo support the Vcore of 2.2V (I think 2.4 is acceptable too, but not any higher than that)

whao, thanx radman! know a lot about these amd things than i do. well, since the vcore of the k6-233 is 3.2v, i have no idea how to set the vcore to 2.2-2.4, because i dont have a manual for the mobo. but i will check into it, and maybe bump this system to a k6-2 450 (right?). also another problem: the 32meg stick of ram that was in the mobo is hyundai 10ns. but when i put my micron 128meg pc133 7.5ns, it still registered as 32megs. any ideas?

I've seen the ram do that before but only when the ram was bad. I'll bet that is not the case, but you never know. Can you try it in another system? What Compaq system do you have?

AkumaX: I have same kind of problem with RAM @ home: when I put 64Mb DIMM into Tyan VX-chipset mobo, it will be recognized as 16Mb-one. What chipset does that Compaq has ?

its an intel chipset. i dont have it in front of me, its an old office computer, used for like data entry and stuff. the micron works fine, because im using it right now in my cel2 633->950 1.85v cas2. when i get a chance to look at it, maybe i can get more info from it. the computer's about 3 years old, not like any other mobo, there's only one DIMM slot (that has 32 megs) and there's a SIMM slot taht i cant take out, it seems permanently stuck(that has 16megs) so it shows up 48 megs in windows

That board might not support cpu voltages below 2.8v ,we really need to have the m/brd make, model & Rev No. to know for certain.

I have Compaq Deskpro 2000 5200MMX, that has 200Mhz Pentium MMx processor. Its mobo has Compaq's name on it and it uses VIA's chips, some are Winbond's (someone guessed that IO or LPT or something like that). Mobo has switches to change bus speed 50-66 and mltiplier 2-3,5 but no switch to change voltage. Can I put anything else in it? I might want to slip my old K6-2 400 there.
