K6-3+ Problems!

I recently bought a K6-3+ and found out while it was being sent to my place that it isn't compatable with my revision of motherboard (P5A revision 1.06).

though I thought I'd at least try it out. I put it in, set the voltage to 2.0, multiplier to 4.5, and the FSB to 100mhz.

turn on the computer?

I get NOTHING.

what appears to happen is that the monitor doesn't recieve any signal, though the drives all seem to do their normal start up routine, until it would get to the point where the computer starts loading windows, at which nothing happens with the hard drive.

could the CPU be dead? shouldn't I hear an error message if there's a problem like that?

am I missing something when setting it up? besides voltage, multiplier, and frequency?

could it be that I require one of those beta BIOS's (I have 1007a) to get it to do ANYTHING?

I tried it on a friends computer, and I got the same responce. His motherboard manual states that he has a SY-5EHM/5EH5 V1.0 motherboard. the SY-5EHM is listed on a compatability list, and his appears to be just the smaller version of the same board (Baby AT).

Soccerman,

Try the K6 Forum at AMDZone, this is the best source of K6+ information:

http://www.amdzone.com/forum/categories.cfm?catid=13

Do a search on your motherboard, if anyone has managed to get it running there will be info there. Your problem sounds like a bios issue.

Good luck, a K6 3+ gives amazing performance considering a socket 7 system is supposed to be "past it"

One thing you might try is, if running windows 95, it doesn't like K6's above 300, so underclock it to 266, see if that boots, then go find the win 95 amd k6 update patch...i used to have it but gave it away, or i'd send it to ya. Hope this helps out.

I would try the newest bios you can get your hands on...I have built a number of computers recently with that chip and all the boards I used recognized the chip only as a K6III chip not the "+". But they all worked just fine and I was even successful in getting them to higher speeds. Oooh..I did have to flash the most recent bios on all of them....

Socerman,

It would be worth you while to do a search at the AMD forum. I did a one and got serveral pages of hits. A few typical comments follow. It looks as though there has been a known problem with your revison of MB. I'll let you do a more detailed search to see if any solution has been found.

Good luck

Quotes follow:

Hummm..most of the P5AB new K6x problems I've heard about relate to terrible performance with newer K62 and all K6+. I think that the boards usually post though. The versions of the P5 boards that don't work with the new K6s are the P5AB rev 1.5 and the P5 rev 1.6 so if you have one of these revisions you can give up now because even if you get it to post its gonna act like a pentium 200. If you have an older revision of the P5AB the chip should work.

If it is above rev. 1.04 (i.e., 1.05 or 1.06), it WILL NOT WORK and YOU MAY FRY THE K6-3+! Really. Take that puppy OUT of that Socket. There's a series of HUGE threads about the problem way way down (maybe a month ago). If you dig enough you will find them. Sorry.

Regarding the system not POSTing, that problem I experience with my p5a and k6-3+. I simply increased the voltage to 2.1 and it worked. It seems that certain p5a's will only work at 2.1 on the k6-3+. Try it. I guarantee it will post at 2.1 volts- sounds like the problem.

That's the good news. Now the bad. In my case, I thought my problems were solved- the system was so slow you would'nt believe it. Before upgrading the bios, check that your p5a revision is prior to 1.05- otherwise forget it.

I have not had one problem with my 450mhz K6-3+ and Asus P5AB MB. The 450mhz K6-3+ does require 2.4v though - it may run at a smaller voltage, but may not be stable.

I tried lowering the voltage to 2.3v one time and I would get crashes in Windows when running games or CPU intensive programs.

Blue Weazel,

that means you dont have a K6-III+ there, just an ordinary K6-III, not even the latest flavor of those - it's the plain original 2.4V K6-III.

K6-III+ are 2.0V or even lower.

Regards, Peter
