KEYLOGGER questions

My 13 year old son had a ton of spyware, adware, and a few viruses on his system, and evidence of porn sites, so I cleaned up his computer and then installed Advanced Keylogger on it.

After a few days I got some text of him entering explicit words in a google search and actual screenshots of it also. A few other screenshots showing porn sites, and few more screen shots of enetering other stuff into google. The keylogger showed these as being typed as well. Both the keylogger and the screenshots are in between an online game he plays. He claims not only didnt he type it, but he never saw them on the screen.

My question is, before I kill him, (lol) Is there any other possible way this could have happened. Of course I want to believe him, but most importantly I dont want to punish him if it was in fact something he didnt do.

The reason is that a month before I walked in on him, and he had porn sites up, but he said they just happened and he was trying to get out of them. He showed me what he did, duplicated everything exactly, and it happened again, innocently, right in front of me. THATS when I cleaned his computer. This time however, he claims he didnt even see the webpages the screenshot show.

Seriously, (as a parent) I know what you are going through. Kids experiment, and they are curious. When they are caught, they play innocent.

Sounds like you could use a good web filter on Jr's PC. A web filter will help block the "oops" factor. Try google, ask around, etc..

Of course, you still have to deal with the top shelf at the convienience store and Jr's friend's Dad's pr0n library...

A keylogger records keystrokes made on the keyboard, so unless somebody else has been using the computer, he's been typing those words.

Not often, and not when these took place. I understand what he is going thru, and I am really not that upset about it. I am upset about him lying. Even threatened to take away his online gaming, and his eighth grade trip, and he dosn't care, he just won't admit that he did it.

MAN, don't I know it. All good advice. Any good internet blockers? I would hate to stop him from using the internet, playing online games, or using email. It just a big part of life now.

How often is he looking at it? If he looks at it all the time, a blocker might be a good idea... but if it's only every once in a while, I wouldn't do much about it. Of course, I'm a 21 year old and I have no kids, so take my suggestions how you want.
I got caught when I was his age, had a talk with my parents, but continued to still look at it sometimes. Maybe you could get him a magazine so you know what the content is like, if you do install an internet filter. That way you know he won't find some of the more hardcore stuff, but he can still have something to look at I don't recall ever seeing gangbangs in Playboy

How did you clean his computer? If you have no idea what you're doing and you just used say Spybot, Ad-Aware and a few other programs to clean it up the spyware and viruses still may be in your system. It all depends on how well you cleaned it up. I know many people think that after using Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper etc they're safe and their system is cleaned when they're not. The spyware and viruses, esp. root kids cannot be removed just by programs. You have to actually do things manually.

Well, yes I used spysweeper, xcleaner, adaware, Spybot, CWSshredder, then I edited the startup files, edited registry entres, deleted directories, etc. I then used free online scanners Panda, Bit defender, and TrendMicro, and took care of waterver it found as well. Either way, would any of that stuff actually type into a google search screen.

The funniest part, one of his searches was for naked wemon. Thats how he spelled it. A virus wouldlnt misspell. ALso I asked him how do you spell women, and he spelled it the wemon. There was a screen showing a logon, and had his brothers email in it, which isnt even on his computer. It also had his friends name and a close but incorrect address. This was both shown on the keylogger, and on a screeenshot. How the HELL could he not have done it.

I am more agrevated at the fact he lied.

JCROCCO, i think the evidence is heavily against him. he obviously did it. if he doesnt care about the things you threatened to take away, then you need to figure out what he does care about and take that away. that might help drive the point into his brain.

Based on what you said, I would think that there is still some viruses or malicious apps on the computer. Some of these things are insane hard to find. My suggestions is to do a clean wipe of the system, re-install Windows and everything from scratch. Then setup your keylogger and stuff. If it is still going on, then you can get mad at your son for lying to you.

I set up my kids box to only allow site I say are allowed, kinda harsh but, when it came down to it there are only a few site he want to view other than play a game now ant then. I used cyberSITTER. G/L. Oh by the way, kid is lying about the keylogger, if he was the only person with access screen capture dont lie

Check with your ISP...Comcast in my area has free AV and partental controls software for download.

imho best way to handle this is education, not repression, okay, maybe if you want to repress your son, do that, but dont skip the education part. tell him about how it goes, definetly tell him about safe sex (if he has a porn fix send im off to collegef**kfest (they always have safe sex there in teh porn as far as I know) but imho, once has hes been in contact with porn I doubt anything you can do will stop him from getting it, it might (and probably will) have the rather opposite effect. what you want to do is mainly counter, and educate. which is offcourse harder than repression, but definetly pais off more.

Dude hes probably embarassed and simply dosent want to say it to you. You know he looked that stuff up, no need to force it out of him. I wouldnt say yes "mom & dad ive been looking up porn" if i got caught when i was 13, id do what your son is doing and simply be defiant to the last, no way in hell would i have admitted it.

Anyways, if he dont see it now he will see it later. Id just leave it be.
