I'm personally astounded at the posters here (not just you) for whom sympathy to the murderers seems to take precedence over that for the innocent victim of this absolutely horrific crime.
I looked through the posts, I'm not sure I see anyone expressing much sympathy for them? Seems like a universal response of "lock them up" or "have them murdered by the state", unless I'm misreading. Or are you interpreting anything short of the death penalty as sympathy?

I would feel anger if those who intentionally run over and kill a person, do not serve time for first degree murder.
But I hope that should be a ... given. An assumption that justice should be / is being carried out. I did not hear otherwise.

To which, a constructive discussion would lead us into how our society creates monsters, and what we can do to improve and change this outcome for other teens. By helping people feel less pain and suffering. To help teens stop and smell the roses, as opposed to viewing others as just meat. When our society fails to pass on its values, we need to step back and ask ourselves what those values are, and how we have failed.

Sympathy for the victim may also be demonstrated by resolving to interrupt the process of creating more monsters and more victims. To break the cycle of violence.

Absolutely not. They will rot in hell in prison for the rest of their lives where they should be.
I'm just sad that they lost out on watching their first born take a breath.
Absolute waste of existence.

Hopefully they will not have any "first Born" or any other born for that matter. The obvious intentional murder by vehicle screams for the death penalty. I guess Life Without Parole will have to do since the death penalty has been halted due to the official moratorium ordered by Governor Gavin Newsom in June 2023.

Personally I would finish that sentence with "you've moved way past impulse control and are firmly ensconced in deliberate activity when it's your 3rd hit and run of the day."

I think you've just ascended from Elite Member to Elite Wise Member with that thought process and the way you worded it.

If only half of us were as wise as you..

This happened in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Apparently found more video and they've been trouble in the law for a long time.

Model citizens.

Here's the punk

"Las Vegas teen expected ‘slap on the wrist’ for hitting, killing cyclist: ‘I’ll be out in 30 days, I’ll bet you’"

He thinks it will be a slap on the wrist. My guess it will be a smidge more

I'm more than willing to argue for second chances, but I don't think these two scumbags deserve it.

Yeah I saw this news story a few days and didn't wanna just reaction based called for capital punishment but if anyone deserves it.. it's serial killers, terrorists and these 2 dudes that never cared about the value of human life.

On the one hand I don't really disagree. I can't generate much concern for what happens to these two.

Though that's partly because I can't help but mentally lump them in with the larger group of "motorists who get away with killing vulnerable road-users" (a topic I have an existing anger about, because there are so many cases of that happening), so there's a bit of collective-punishment in my own reaction that I'm not sure is fair.

But on the other hand I still think the far more important issue is 'what produces people who behave like this?' and 'how do we stop creating such people...or at least make it harder for them to do such things?'

Whatever happens to these two individuals it isn't going to really fix anything.

Pop, pop. 2 rounds to the back of the head of each one. There's no rehabilitating mutts like them ..and prison will only make them worse.

Easy.. execute the parental units that failed..

Like the ones who let their kids get guns and they shoot up the school and teachers.

Until the kid turns 18, the parental units should be RESPONSIBLE.

See? Stories like this are making you crazy. Show me a parent that can control a 16yo when they are not around.

It's their peers that raised them, not their absentee parents.
You want to execute their former classmates?

Really?

Then isn't it more proof the parental units that failed a few times already at their job?

Sure.. but the flip side is.. you ignored one basic fact:

Most 16yo don't go around (trying to or in some cases actually succeeding in) killing people for fun!

Something is seriously wrong when stuff like this or that kid that shot up her teacher or his school happens.

That's where the line has to be drawn.. murder/ attempted murder.

I'm glad in both instances Michigan and Virgina.. they're going after the parents but need much much stronger laws prevent that vs preventing abortions.

There's a difference between these kids and when parent provide weapons to their kids. You can't blame parents unless they had some active role in the crime or at least knowledge of it.

I'm of the opinion that some people are just going to be scum. Doesn't matter how they're brought up, they're just going to be scum of the earth.

It's a very complicated issue, but just generalizing here, I'd say being raised in a nurturing environment plays a huge role in kids growing up to be good citizens.

Workers need to be paid a thriving wage, not just a living wage, but a thriving wage. A thriving wage is one where you have the ability to pay for housing, food on the table, and still have a little money left over for entertainment and a real vacation away from home every couple years. There's no reason a CEO makes more in one day, than the majority of a company's workers do in a year.

Housing can't just be a place to sleep. Recreational facilities such as a basketball court, swimming pool, and other areas where they be physically active. People need access places to socialize, a place to just sit and enjoy nature if that's what they wish, or one to play board games or other activities with friends and family.

Access to higher education. THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE TO SOCIETY WHEN THE GENERAL POPULACE IS EDUCATED. The only downside is it's harder to suppress the plebs if they're educated. The upside is you have more citizens studying fields such as maths, sciences, and other fields. You'll also have more citizens taking up art, such as writing music, books, and poetry. As an avid reader, I'd love for there to be more literature for all.

Equality for all. Women and minorities are people too. You cannot expect to suppress a group of people based on things like color of skin. Everyone deserves the right to their own bodies, and to express themselves as they wish. Yes, this means you can't use religious reasons to do things like ban abortion, or force any one religion upon your neighbors.

Really?

On some point parents failed to teach kids..

"YOU DO NOT GO AROUND KILLING PEOPLE"

Isn't that life lesson number 1 before watching R rated movies anymore or something?

This is a seriously idiotic take. You act as if their parents were raising them saying "remember, it's ok to run over people on bikes if you think it'll be fun". I may be in my 40's but I still remember what it's like to be a teenager. You don't want to listen to your parents, you want to impress your peers, you want to have a thrill. And I didn't grow up with the ability to go viral for being a stupid jackass.

I love that I grew up without social media on my shoulders.

This case is tragic all around. What a waste.

I'm in my 40's and a xennial. Grew up with computers and cell phones in high schools so we texted and had AOL.

Sure I remember kids didn't want to listen to parents all the time but I still remember that the way to impress peers was to bed as many boys/ girls you could. 1 girl got preggers and then was not in school anymore and shunned by the other girls.

We had our websites.. mine was filled with pictures of going to concerts Fear Factory, Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Man-o-war, Nine Inch Nails and raves eventually etc.

The one thing I distinctly remember, no one in my school bragged about their dad taking them hunting or taking them to a shooting range.

Maybe my NYC high school was "normalish" except for 1 thing - no guns??

You are right.. I apparently got that gene too where I didn't grow up with the ability to go viral for being a stupid jackass.. much less a murderer.
