Why would it? If Amazon can track what you do on the Kindle Fire HD, they can just as easily track what you do with the Kindle App on a Nexus, no?

Yeah, your ebook reading gets tracked regardless of what device you are on. And I don't think this is a bad thing. Obviously they want to know where you stopped reading so your progress can be synced with other Kindle readers. They know what you searched for and looked at because they use it as part of their recommendations. This is pretty normal, Google does it even more.

* Kindle OS. In a weird way the Kindle OS is a good thing on this tablet if you are into Amazon content, ebooks, videos. I love the recommendations and how easy it is to find and buy new content.

These two are big. The Lending Library has good stuff in it, too - the entire Harry Potter collection, the Hunger Games, not exactly cheap no name books. Regarding the OS, I originally rooted my KF and installed stock ICS, but went back to Amazon's OS. The big reason was battery life. The Amazon version has phenomenal standby time - I can leave my Kindle idle for a week, pick it up, and it's good to go. When I had ICS on it, I had to charge it every 2-3 days regardless of if I used it or not, which I found quite irritating, because I don't use it every day.

I wouldn't use a Kindle app. In fact, It came with my device, and I removed it. That's kind of the point. The brand names change, but the tracking and control stay the same.

I gifted my son with a Kindle Fire HD, I actually really like the device,screen quality is great,the sound quality is amazing & it's nice to be able to borrow a book a month & enjoy the free videos available to Prime members. Besides, with a bit of tweaking you can enable a better browser & more app choices.

Ok, so I am pretty set on the Fire now. She has made it pretty clear that she doesn't want a full blown tablet, that she mainly wants something that she can use to read on. The lending library is just too good of a deal to pass up since she is a pretty big reader. Thanks for your input.

Just an FYI, The Kindle app isn't the only thing tracking you on the Internet.
