Knowing the right RAM settings

Hi all,

I am by no means a newbie to computers, but I have always been more knowledable on the software side than on the hardware side. I'm currently having some problems with XP locking up and I suspect it may be my RAM.

I was looking at my memory settings in my BIOS, and there is a dizzying array of options. Same thing for the CPU FSB, etc. I need some guidance here - my goal is not to overclock or push my system, I just want it to run smoothly without any freeze ups!

Basically - I have an Athlon XP 3000+ and a MSI K7N2 Delta motherboard. I'm not sure what settings to use for the CPU FSB, and also things like the FSB/DRAM ratio.

What type of RAM do you have? What is the speed of the Front Side Bus?

RAM modules have an automatic SPD setting by how fast the CPU FSB in running. These setting usually work well.

Was this a recent problem or have you made any hardware/software changes recently (or around the time you had the lockups). If you suspect it's your RAM try running memtest86 which will test out your RAM for you.
