I know someone here will know what this is called. I've been to some Korean BBQ restaurants (also some sushi buffets) that have this green vegetable with a light sesame dressing on it. It's often served cold. The vegetable is green, kind of a mix between asparagus, broccoli, and bean sprouts if you asked me. I keep meaning to ask the waitress what it's called, but I always get side tracked. Anyone here know what the dish is called? Better yet, anyone have a good recipe for it?

Wow, no Koreans in the house?

At least, I think this is a Korean dish. All the Korean BBQ places in Hawaii I went to had this as a vegetable and it was always the first side I picked.

The stalks weren't that thick. This was a food that, when you picked it up with chopsticks, would hang down a bit. It still had a bit of crunch to it, however. Some of the stalks had tiny florets at the end, kind a cross between broccoli and asparagus in that respect.

Definitely not cabbage. Maybe it was spinach after all. For some reason it didn't seem like spinach.

i think i know what you're talking back. Maybe it's seasoned raddish? I'm not sure what it actually is or called.

e: it is a lighter green, almost... clear/brightish right?

They usually use the smaller tender ends/plants and chop it up into bite sized peices, but this is what your looking for:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_broccoli

its a chinese vegetable, another possibility is watercress. sesame seed oil is a popular dressing down here, goes on anything and everything from bean sprouts to cabbage to whatever, just add a little of it to a vegetable and you got an instant side dish.

Yes, I think that's it! I've seen several recipes for the Korean sesame spinach salad (often served cold) but your link to chinese broccoli looks more accurate.

I think you are talking about spinach, we don't have any Chinese broccoli dish.

I'm going to try the recipe tonight. I usually only eat spinach raw or in certain dishes, not by itself. This should be good.

the side dishes in general are called banchan.

<-- not korean, i just eat their food.

found a picture.

Sigumchi Namul

Unless that Korean restaurant in Hawaii is not serving genuine authentic Korean food, it is certainly the Sigumchi Namul (literally means Seasoned Spinach Mix).

It's certainly NOT the Chinese brocolli or bokchoy or some bokchoy-esque veggies or watercress. Koreans do NOT eat those in their original cuisine.

Yeah, that last picture looks familiar. These places (I went to 3 of them) were pretty authentic, no-nonsense restaurants run by Korean families.

I'm going to try that recipe and see what happens. It'll be weird eating it with a fork for a change!

the sigumchi namul looks like it. but there are quite a few non-korean sides they serve here in hawaii. Id say depending on which place you go to you can find either or. I know for a fact that some places have watercress, along with stuff like mac salad, shoyu potatoes, potato salad.

True, I also had mac salad.

I know one place was called Best Drive-In on Sand Island Access Rd. right near West Marine. There was another "drive in" a few shops down as well and they had it too. There's a chain called Yummy that serves it as well.

Well, I tried that recipe tonight...

Holy soy sauce, Batman! The amount of soy sauce the recipe called for was ridiculous @ 2 Tbsp. I think it could have used half as much, maybe as little as 2 tsp. The sesame flavor was decent, but it was difficult to figure out if it was right because it was just way too salty. The sesame oil I have is dark in color and very strong, so I might only use half as much for that as well.

The lady that cut my hair today is Korean and I asked her about the dish. She said it's sesame leaves. I asked about spinach and she said probably not, but that it was worth a try. I thought it was pretty close, but I'll probably try the sesame leaves later on anyway.
