Hey guys I ran across his video tonight and was wondering if anybody has encountered this issue with the latest whql adrenaline driver? I have an AIB 6900 XT and run it but haven't seen anything weird apart from the normal stuff like the card randomly drops signal to my 2nd UW monitor. He's got over 50 cards as of his video and all died running the new driver irrespective of their individual use cases which were all different.

Yes, the correct driver is probably being installed but AMD not making this driver available officially to RDNA2 users means that it has probably not been validated as much for RDNA2 hardware. What if the Adrenaline software has tweaks in it specific for RDNA3 and it is applying those tweaks to RDNA2 when people bypass AMD's basic download prevention and install the newer control panel on their older hardware?
Then again not really AMDs fault if people install drivers clearly stated by AMD “for 7000 series only” or in other words not for anything else. That’s again user error. But 99% unrelated to what happened in this thread, the other theories made more sense. Something wrong with manufacturing or again user error with repasting and too much clamp force on the die, breaking it in the process. GPU drivers can not circumvent the bios safety measures of the GPU btw, so if in theory the driver forced higher voltage it would just throttle or shut down, and not run until it breaks.

edit: I wanna add: any higher voltage “safe”for 7000 series would also be safe for 6000 series. So this theory is entirely pointless. It’s not the driver.

We can only wait and see how the story develops further and if any of the usual hardware news sites pick up this story. Otherwise, maybe that repair guy just got a bad batch of abused GPUs that were bought by the users from the SAME miner and now all of those ended up in the same place for repair.

Also look at the edit of my last post.

The only “news” I saw about this was one website talking about the video, and that’s it. I didn’t see reputable YouTubers picking it up for example, only Fabio talked briefly about it, explaining his doubts.

I agree on your theory with the repair guy. And let’s not forget that 60 gpus isn’t really much, it’s a lot for one guy but not in the grand scheme of things. As long as it’s not 100s or 1000s of GPUs it doesn’t mean much.

Yup, this is looking like a nothing burger.

Cool. Doesn't explain why they have a driver package separate from every other currently supported retail generation. All of which share the same drivers. I also don't know if you guys are trying to enlighten me or argue with me? Because this isn't my BBQ, it's Fabio's. Perhaps he would engage with you concerning his hypothesis.

Oh, certainly not trying to argue with you

Just stating what I know from my experience with driver installs, and my experience working in software development.

Nice gate keeping in this community btw. One guy straight copying my post and pretending it’s his and another saying “I don’t know you I don’t trust you.” Wow, way to make someone new feel welcome.

All 3 drivers (22.12.1, 22.12.2, and 23.1.1) failed to recognize my 6900XT at all.

I have a 7950X with iGPU that was recognized, so it makes sense the drivers allowed me to install them.

Update:

With my 7950X iGPU enabled, all 3 drivers would install however they did not recognize the 6900XT, only the iGPU. Device manager as well, indicated there was no driver installed for the 6900XT, only the iGPU. It was running on windows basic VGA driver at that point.

With my 7950X iGPU disabled, all 3 drivers refused to install, indicating I did not have supported hardware for the driver.

No idea why this is even a thing people are talking about, unless the initial releases didn't correctly gate driver installation. Even if they didn't, I'd expect the same result I saw, which was GPU not recognized.

Edit: I checked all the installer files from the drivers, they are all consistent with the release date. I don't think the driver packages were modified after release.

Yes, these are all only for 7000 series as AMD is now concentrating and working hard on fixing all issues of the newer cards. RDNA2 drivers are very good and don’t need much attention right now.

Yes, my account is old but I was only active in the commentary section before, so if you know me from there you know, if not, then I’m kinda “new”.

It seems some people were somehow able to install it on 6000 series. Strange enough, it seems it’s not possible anymore.

Not sure how they were able to get it to function. I checked the actual files, the current download of the old 7900 only drivers are unmodified since release. Even with my iGPU allowing installation the drivers did not work for the 6900XT at all. Simply reverted to basic windows VGA driver.

I will fire up my 6600XT system and give it a go. My other 2 RDNA2 systems are currently Linux distros so I don't think that would be relevant.

There is no way that extreme die damage is from a driver. Zero. Strictly mechanical damage possibly intentional.
The only time I heard of dies cracking from use was XOC btw, Actuallyhardcoreoverclockings channel. This was with extreme voltage and clocks - I don’t see this happening with just a driver install even if it’s the wrong one (that to some people works and to some won’t even install and not work).

I am on the 6600XT system. Whoops something went wrong! Error 182. That was trying the latest 23.1.1 from 2 days ago.

On a related (unrelated?) note btw (new driver):

Its a shame they didn't have this kind of tweak at launch. One of the complaints was idle power draw. And sure, it is fixed now. But release day reviews are already out there. And if somebody googles a review for these cards, those are the ones that show up.

Yep it is what it is, they wanted to meet the release date and not postpone it, especially if you consider Christmas holidays, this is not a possibility for them. So it was delivered “as is” with fixes later. But tbh, I think that a lot of people don’t care about idle / video power draw - what they however care a lot about is stability and performance. So it’s not that bad, unless you’re VR heavy, then … well they will fix that soon I hope. The worst critics I see are about buzzing noises of the power delivery, and then the issue with the bad batch of reference coolers they had. Buzzing noises seems to affect all high end cards since years, the other thing hardly AMDs fault, unlucky.

Thanks man, you are another one I fully trust for info. Could you speculate on why they chose to not roll support into the Adrenaline package all the other cards use? If you have the time of course.

I think others covered it already, but most likely it's a matter of time and cost. You can get iterations for the new cards out faster if you don't bother regression testing / validating the drivers against older cards. Even if you keep the chunks for the old cards the same and only update the branches for the new card, you still should do regression testing just to make sure something wasn't touched or tweaked that wasn't supposed to be for older cards. I was actually surprised that others were able to even install them as, in my experience, the AMD driver checks if your card is supported by the driver before install (as @Justinus talked about) and won't install if it's not in the supported list. Since others are experiencing this with these drivers, I don't know what happened. With seemingly no one else reporting issues, though, it really does seem to be a non-issue, probably caused by some major user error (e.g. a miner trying to repaste a a bunch of cards and no knowing what they were doing).

Maybe there is a bonus round?

I woke up the following morning, and the 4x RX 5700 XT rig was dead off, no lights from the riser cards, no fan noise, nothing.

Pushing power switch - nothing.

Holding power switch in for 5 seconds, then pressing power switch - nothing.

Unplugging cable from back of PSU, flipping PSU switch back and forth a few times, plugging it back in, and then pressing the power button in front - NOTHING!

The rig is acting dead-dead again.

I honestly don't know what's going on here.

I b

If the Graphics card is not working, wouldn't you hear the dreaded Beep Beep sound? Unless MB/CPU/PSU is dead, there would be some kind of beep.

I tested this against my 6800XT since I now have a 7900XT. Installed driver 23.1.1 which is no different from 22.12.2 in that both are 7900XT/X series drivers. Then cloned my OS SSD using a Sabrent USB-C external m.2 enclosure to another m.2 SSD. Plopped that into my spare rig with 6800XT installed. Windows recognized new device, booted... and nothing. I need to install an appropriate driver in order to actually utilize the 6800XT as it is not a recognized device on a 7900XT only driver.
