Alomst 2 years ago I researced and posted here and ended up with a KT7 and Duron 650. It's been running at 850 ever since. Board has origional BIOS (version TL). I plan on upgrading after the 1st of the year. Until then, here's the question: If I flash the newest BIOS, can I install a Duron 1300? To be honest, I got the Duron1300 thinking I'd just set the multiplier but the board won't boot. I don't get the 1st beep. I guess that means the board doesn't recognize the processor or is the processor bad? I set the voltage to 1.75 before installing the 1300, but left the multiplier on x8.5. Put the old 650 back in and it runs fine. Yea, I know this is a slow system by today's standards, but what do you think?
Thanks,
Steve

The KT7 ABIT board is a Socket A CPU, and if you take off the Duron why would you want to put another Duron back on? NewEgg has the Athlon XP1600+ AROIA stepping
Socket A for $53 and free freight. Without tampering with the chip to unlock it, you should be able to tweak the BIOS settings and get you system performing like a really
high performance system. The KT7 when it was new - like 2 years ago was a great performing board, and the XP1600+ is a drop in and close the latch. You already have a
very good heatsink, so the most cost effective improvement is a XP1600+.

Ur mobo does not support Duron morgan core. The bios didn't recognise the CPU...thts why no beep/no POST. But do support any Duron splitfire or Athlon T-Bird up to i.4 GHz.

1) Will the Athlon XP 1600+ be much better for gaming?
2) If so can someone eithner help me with BIOS settings or direct me to a source where I can find out?
2) I flashed the new BIOS. Under CPU multiplier, the highest setting is now "over 12.5" How does one go past x12.5? I'm going to install the Duron 1300 after lunch.

As always, thanks.

Does not support this cpu...

1) Will the Athlon XP 1600+ be much better for gaming?

As for the 12.5 multiplier or above the cpu will set that... (but only with a 100fsb Tbird cpu NOT and XP series they are 133fsb) It may be possible for the board to support the Duron 1300...? I know that some..."some" KT133 boards will support the "morgan" core cpu`s but not all...

2) I flashed the new BIOS. Under CPU multiplier, the highest setting is now "over 12.5" How does one go past x12.5? I'm going to install the Duron 1300 after lunch.

Best of luck... (I would move up to a atleast a KT266a chipset board and solve your problem... & keep the Duron 650@850 in the KT7)

I had problems with version 1.0 of the KT7A motherboard when I tried to run an XP, and when I contacted Abit, they stated that they would not certify compatibility with the new processors (XP's and Morgans) before version 1.3 of that motherboard. So you will not be able to use an XP or morgan core. I would recommend trading the morgan core duron for a 1.4 Tbird if you want the fastest thing that your board will take. I know how you feel, as I had to trade the XP for a 1.4 Tbird myself. Good Luck.

The answer to a lot of the questions here can be found at this FAQ page.

What I would like to know is what the odds are that the KT7A v1.3 will take the latest thoroughbred revision and barton core chips...

FYI, I now have the Duron 1300 running on this board. I flashed the latest BIOS, and it booted 1st time up. Tried to verify version # of this board, but I can't see the sticker and I dont want to take to board out just for that. I thought I remembered it as a version 1, but it's been ahile and I can't find if/where I wrote it down. Thanks for the responses.

I installed an AthlonXP 1800 in my KT7A-RAID v1.0 board(previously flashed with the 7N BIOS), wouldn't POST initially 'till I hit the reset switch, now all is well.

Please let us know, how it works for you. If the new Duron works stable that would be a major success!!!
I had KT7RAID in my box 2 years ago, and right now it is still working fine in my friend's box...
If the new Duron works fine, then I just have found for him an el cheapo upgrade idea..
Also..
For other peeps out there -do not suggest an Athlon XP or T-bird 266 Mhz......
This board uses KT 133 chipset, enough said.....

The KT7 is a 100Mhz board and will not take the XP(133) cpus. I would upgrade to the latest bios and try out a 1gig duron. If it works then you can make that overclock magic happen...If not then get a 950 and OC that baby.

If the 200(KT133) board POSTs with an unlocked 266 CPU, go into the BIOS and raise the multiplier(ie a 1GHz Athlon C normally running at 7.5 X 133, will run at 10 X 100).

I had two original KT7 non A motherboards. Using the 7N bios I was able to run both with the Morgan 1GHz overclocked to 1200MHz with the core voltage mod. Very stable and very fast, I was using a 105 x 11.5 configuration. I heard the earliest revision of the KT7 didn't support the XP core, but both of mine worked fine, never checked which version. For a very cheap upgrade for these boards I would suggest the Morgan 1.2GHz, it will run 1300MHz without a core voltage mod, which is close to the max speeds for these boards anyway.

FYI, my Duron 1300's been going strong for a couple days now. I was gaming for several hours yesterday with no problems, but I haven't run any stability tests. I did notice that when I flashed the A9 BIOS, there's now an option for 133/33 CPU FSB/PCI Clock for Thunderbird I guess, so this is apparently not just for 100(200) FSB. BTW, I believe my board is the KT7 not the KT7a.
