Lan cards problems

I have recently buyed 3 lan cards all for ISA sots.

First two cards are same they have UMC - um9003af chips (BNC Cards)
Third one is AMD ) - am79c960kc (UTP Card)

The problem is when i insert any of this cards they are not recognized by my computer. There is not network adapter shown in the table on the boot, and same in windows. It acts like i didn't inserted them at all. My mobo is via c 693a/596b 2isa 5pci & agp slot. Please help.
Does they need to be connected to the hub for computer to recognize them?

Where to begin?

* Unless you have a machine that doesn't support PCI, avoid ISA slot cards. Too much hassle to configure, especially in this day and age
* ISA cards cannot really support 100TX, since it is a 16-bit architecture
* ISA cards also impose MUCH more processor overhead than an equivalent PCI card.
* If you plan to use all of these cards together int he same network, I hope the first two are combo (BNC & UTP) cards, because if not, you're gonna have a heck of a time physically networking these cards together. BNC and UTP use COMPLETELY different types of wiring.
* MOST ISA cards are not Plug-n-Play, which means you have to do several things to make one work properly
- Configure the card's IRQ and MEM settings (either using jumpers or a utility supplied by the vendor)
- Reserve those same resources in your computers BIOS (to avoid conflicts with other devices)

In conclusion, my best advice is to dump these cards and go with decent PCI network cards.

Almost all of ISA Network Cards, are not Plug and Play.

Go to control panel, click on Add Hardware, and let Windows try to look for the card.

If it very old cards Windows probably will not find it. If it so, you have to stick the drivers in Drive A: and add it manually.

6. I have no empty PCI slots.
7. BNC cards can operate without hub
8. I can't add drivers in windows if computer doesent recognize them at all (Not even as unknown device)
9. No drivers for XP
10. Not sure if my ISA slots work at all.

And INCLUDING all this info in your original post would've helped move things along more quickly...'nuf said.
Point #9 is the one I'd like to focus on: No drivers for XP.
Are you running XP on this box? If so, then the lack of drivers is a deal-breaker.
And if that is a deal-breaker, then go with a good, affordable PCI card.
(Yeah yeah, I know...ya got no free pci slots. With 5 slots on your board, WTH have you got installed that's eating up 5 slots?)

The old saying "You get what you pay for" goes double for old cr@p that someone gives you for free.

Don't know how folks do it in "Yugoslavia," but here in America, "buying" something does not usually imply "free," and vice-versa.

OK Ihave buyed them from some guy for 1$ (one) dollar one card = 3$ dollars 3 cards. If you think that its a price worth mentioning then ok they cost me 3$ not free )). Btw these cards are manifactured 1994 (UMC) and 1992 (AMD). So you can't find them new and buy them.,

Funny how expensive a "free" card can get, once all the time tryin to get it to work is added up.

Oh and yes i am running XP professional and Linux in my box.
and...
1st PCI - Sound Blaster live 5.1
2nd PCI - Voodoo 2
3rd PCI - SCSI controller
4th PCI - Modem
5th PCI - Multi port multi function adapter

Thanks's everyone for trying to help . It seems that i'll just have to remove voodoo and take that pci card. I have seen one TARGET internal 10 mbs HUB / Net card in one so maybe.....
It was 25 $

check the hardware compatibility list for XP. Time to get some new nics dude. Year is 2002 ya know.

If You only have ONE Isa slot it is a good bet it is shared with the last PCI slot.

Yeah i wish to keep something to remember 3dfx. I have GF2 MX-400 in agp.

And It seems that all of the cards have worked all the time Just Win XP didn't support them. I have installed Win95 osr2 on a small partition last night and they workked . Win95 even putted drivers from it's database
It seems that BNC cards are Novell Netware NE2000 compactible (Man thats old)
and the amd is generic am2100/am1500t compactible.


No I have 2 ISA slots. Btw it's not phisicaly possible to put a card in the first ISA slot if last PCI is occupied

Sorry if I am naive, but what does one need such an adapter for? I've never encountered one (well, never knowingly encoutered one ), so what do they do? It may be entirely unnessecary, and can be removed to free up a PCI slot.

Definitely try, AS HARD AS YOU CAN, to get some new network cards. I wouldn't even take cards from before 1998, even if they were free. Too much hassle, and plus, their performance, combined with the performance shortcomings of ISA, will really make them seem SLOW compared to a newer, PCI NIC.

Also, if you already have a GF 2- MX400 in your AGP slot, why are you keeping the V2? The GF2 is far superior to the V2, and most applications and games can use either or -- dump that V2 if you can. That can also free a PCI slot. If you wish to keep it as memorabilia, just stick it in a cardboard box and keep it in a closet somewhere No sense wasting a PCI slot!

I'd take your XP software and return it to the place you bought it. I'm sure they would give you a refund.
