Lan Situation needs help

Here's the situation:

25 Computers on the LAN

1 Server

All new Dell Machines running Windows 2000 Pro (server running server edition)

No money to spend on additional software and no priacy on network either (auditing)

Here's what I want to do:

There are 25 computers, 2 groups of users each wtih 20 users or so.

I want to set up the computers where the Desktop is taken with them wherever they log on. For instance Person X logs onto machine 20 and copies files onto his desktop. Tom he logs onto machine 10, I want the desktop to be the same. Of course all the users will also be restricted from installing software or changing and settings on the machine. The main question is how to make the desktop follow them everywhere. I thought about regedit and running the desktops off the server but that is just too much for the server to handle (or is it) Server specs is dual piii's at 866mhz + 512mb ram, scsi hot swap 18gigers (2) with tape backup.

Any ideas??

You need to set up active directory. This alows roaming profiles (as well as total network/client management...well almost)

If I did this setup I would setup active directory. And I would also provide the users with home folders and roaming profiles. In order to set up ad go to the win 2000 server box and select run then type dcpromo. It will step you through the setup of ad. You will also have to config dns if you need more details let me know or pm me.

the DNS is the thing killing me really...setting up users will also be a pain (thats 40+ users ) but it has to be done.

So how do I setup the DNS?

You want to install active directory integrated dns also you want to allow for dynamic updates. You can set the dns up in one of two ways when you run dcpromo and install ad it should prompt you to config dns you must use a fully qualified domain name for example something like aplhanetworks.com. Or you can install dns before you setup ad by going to add remove programs and selecting add remove windows componets you will then go to network tools select dns and it will prompt you for the source of the i386 directory you can get this from the cd or maybe you have the install files on a network share. Tell me is this domain going to be hosting an exchange server. After you tell me what you've done so far I will break it done into more details.

Plus, no it's not running exchange, everything will just be localized into the office.

you can call it anything you wish you could call it mydomain.notyours.anythinghere if you wanted.

Well do you plain to run a dhcp server. Also you still have not listed what you have done so far. Also check this documenttation out.
