Well, I opened up some of the areas on the bottom of my toshiba satellite A15 the other night, just to see what was there. Laptops are suprisingly upgradable these days compared to my old P90 thinkpad. CPU is replaceable (standard socket 478), memory, HD, CDrom...everything but video basically. Anyway, my laptop only has a 2.0 celeron chip, 400mhz FSB, and I see laptop chips on ebay fairly often. I know toshiba has a15 satellites that are P4s, and I know the chipset on my laptop technically supports P4 chips. So I need a 400FSB P4, what voltage? I believe the celeron specs at 1.5 Is it a p4-m or Mobile Pentium 4? anyone actually done an upgrade like this? Any suggestions? thanks

use Sisoft Sandra, a free software, that will tell you the system spec. and cpu info in your laptop. Yes even the voltage. find out your chipsets and then goto the intel's web site to see if your chipsets support the P4, or p4-m or what ever

It's a mobile Celeron processor -- i.e. not the desktop model, but based on the P4-m:

The mobile Celerons were actually half decent since they had 256kb of L2 cache vs the 128kb L2 of the desktop Celeron. You probably won't notice any difference if you changed out the chip since 256kb cache is what the older P4 Willamettes had. As for voltage, the mobile celeron uses 1.3v.

Mobile P4s aren't cheap either -- the highest for the platform was the 2.5Ghz P4-m and it sells for close to $400: http://www.buy.com/retail/prod...=10344663&loc=101&sp=1

The Celeron processor is not designed on the P4-M model, unless you are talikng about the mobility factor. The P4-M processor is actually in a way faster than its desktop counterpart. A 2.0GHz P4-M does the same amount of processing as a 4.0GHz Pentium 4 desktop chip. (no HT tech)

nope.

the Pentium M (P-M) is what you are referring to. its celeron is the celeron M with half the cache and missing the speed step tech.

the P4-M IS based on the desktop pentium 4...and its celeron is the "mobile celeron"

I think you are better off to upgrade the HHD to a 7200rpm one and add more ram.
If don't do any CPU intensive stuff, don't waste your money heh.
