thinkpads are usually considered to have one of the best keyboards. my friend has one and its pretty comfortable compared to other laptops ive used. not sure what about it makes it so good. just feels bigger and more spacious

im in the market for a laptop and imo keyboards and screens are the two most important things.. ie, the two things that you actually physically interact with.

so which laptop keyboards do you guys like best? also how are the macbook pros? im looking at the 17" macbook pro as well as the thinkpad..

The only keyboard I like better than the MacBook Pro (are you sure you need 17", it is awfully large) are the MacBooks. My keyboard is just about the finest that I have ever used on a laptop, though the MacBook Pro keyboard is darn close. I like how the letters on the MBP are slightly concave but all the rest of the keys are flat, gives you a bit of tactile information for where your hands are.

I have a Powerbook G4, same casing somewhat as a Powerbook Pro, and I love the keyboard, it is nothing but pleasant to use and after 4+ years of use and having drinks spilled all over it, it still works flawlessly. The screens on Powerbooks are also some of the best.

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I find the Macbook's keyboard to be one of the worst, least comfortable to use. MBP is better, but I still prefer the Lenovo keyboards by a mile. The spacing, travel, and shape of the MB keys all seem way off to me.

well i mainly want the 1920x1200 resolution. if i went with a 15" i would probably go with the thinkpad since it is 1680x1050, any lower than that is no good for my needs. i thought i read somewhere that there are 15"s that do 1920, but i imagine its really small haha

Dell Latitudes
The setting of the keys is thought out better than for the lenovos.
(Size of backspace, Ctrl / Fn key placement, ...)

I also hate the MB keyboards

MacBook seems to be love or hate. I personally really like it, the spacing feels good to me since I have larger hands, and having the physical gap between the keys helps reduce accidental presses, as does the flat surface. But again, love or hate.

To OP: I can't agree with you more, as far as the two most important features of a laptop. My main issue with Thinkpads was that they don't offer a glossy, high-contrast screen (like Dell TruLife or Sony XBRITE), but their keyboards rock my world. Trackpoint is a huge plus too for the 10% of the time I don't have a mouse plugged in. That being said here's my reasoning for picking the Thinkpad:

1) Keyboard is VERY good. I can't say that the MacBook keyboard is bad, and I actually like it.
1a) Keyboard is replaceable for cheap and it takes about 2 minutes and no brains. This is a great option when your Thinkpad reaches that "slightly old" age.

2) Screen is "modable". I just learned about a company called Screentek. They can repolarize the Thinkpad LCD to make it glossy and uses the same technology as Sony XBRITE, Dell TruLife, etc... for $100! They market it under the name Pixelbright (do a google search for screentek).

That takes care of the two most important aspects for you. Furthermore:

3) Thinkpads are rock solid.
4) Cheaper
5) More expandability

Screentek and Thinkpads... a match made in heaven (at least until Thinkpads upgrade to better LCDs)

Personally, I think they all suck! Touchpads too!

Unless I'm forced into using the built-in keyboard and touchpad... like at the airport, or a meeting, I use a regular ol' desktop Logitech keyboard and mouse - 19" Dell monitor too!

Matter of fact, that's what I'm doing right now...

Question for you... why beat up your lappy if you don't have to?

good points, however i plan on doing travelling. specifically plan on living in australia, europe, southamerica, for 3 months at a time or whenever my visa expires or whenever i get bored. a suitcase and backpack is all im planning on, so i dont know how practical it is to ship a monitor and keyboard as well! keyboard might make sense

im actually probably gonna sell my dual 20" lcd monitor setup just to lighten my possessions that i need to store while gone. so the laptop is pretty much gonna be a desktop replacement (and my work is on computer)

Gotcha!

Well, what I did was go to brick and mortars, and play with every lappy I could find - try to break the keys off, and so forth...

I noticed this is much easier if someone else has already broken off 4-5 keys! And, that was usually on Lenovo Thinkpads.

My theory is this... Thinkpads have this 'tough guy' stigma attached to them (before Lenovo bought IBM) and everyone wants to try to bust the keys (and they do). I'm here to tell you, it ain't that hard. Try it for yourself!

Having said that, flex is also a problem! Some keyboards flex WAY more than others, and this is rather disconcerting. Plus, the %$#& trackpads/touchpads always cause problems when your typing - at least for me. Somehow I always manage to tap the touchpad with my thumb when I hit the space bar, sending the cursor halfway up the screen...

All I can tell you is - go to your favorite brick and mortar, try to bust the keys off, twist the displays until they go goofy and see if they recover when you let go, try to bust the hinges, put all your weight on the center of the keypad to see how much it flexes, et cetera. That's what B&Ms are for. Some sucker will buy it off the 'blowout table' after it's been repaired...

If you find one that suits your purposes, go for it! Don't worry about what everybody else thinks...

Stores tend to segregate fringe computers away from the rest...

Good luck on goofing one of these up without the salesman catching you!

They usually watch the Apple isle/table like a hawk, waiting for some sap to walk up...

Kinda like the front row at a car dealership...

the trackpad thing is annoying with Windows, but if do decide to get a macbook or macbook pro, it automatically ignores accidental trackpad input when you are typing (in OS X). I don't have Windows installed anymore to see if the BootCamp drivers allow for that or not. I am about 99% sure that Windows does not allow this by default, and you have to manually turn off most trackpads if you hook up a mouse.

Some laptops have a button right above (or to the side) of the touchpad that turns it off for those of you with clumsy thumbs and palms, and you also might try decreasing the touch sensitivity a bit Another important thing is where the pad is located, try it out yourself and see if your palm touches the pad when you hold your hands like you normally would to type.

I don't type a lot, and I haven't used very many laptops, so I can't really tell you much about keyboards, but I do know my Inspiron E1505 hasn't given me any trouble with the touchpad while I'm typing. It's recessed a bit, and I'm not big boned by any interpretation of the phrase, so it's all good. That said I don't recommend the Inspirons for other reasons, namly, they aren't durable; however I have hard good things about the Latitudes in this department.

just want to report
i went to the apple store today.

the macbook keyboard looks very weird, but upon use it ends up being pretty good.
the macbook pro however, seemed mushy and not very good at all

my friends thinkpad is still easily best though

Apparently there's the "crap" thinkpad keyboard (Chicono... or something) and it's still tons better than anything out there. Then there's the "awesome" thinkpad keybaord (NMB) that's tons better then the "crap" version.

Anyone know more about this?

I've really enjoyed my Acer Aspire 5102's KB. It's my first laptop however, though I have used friends'/relatives' Dell's/IBMs. I'm probably just biased because I'm used to it, but I'm starting to prefer my Acer's KB to my desktop KB.
