I'm looking for a laptop with a fingerprint reader, something at least 15.4".

I wasnt sure if it is best to get DDR2 5300 ram, or some cheaper ram, but I know I want 2GB.

I also would like a 7200rpm hard drive as the main drive, anything more than 60gb should be fine.

All thinkpads have the option and thinkpads are quite simply the best notebooks ever. A 15" T series would do all of this in an amazing package. Link.

bob...maybe you should give a budget? the T60 is an awesome laptop...i'm not sure why you need at least a 15" one but costco.com has a decent one for $1100. the Latitude line of Dell has some. i'm pretty sure the D620 and D820 have it.

D620 & D820 have the option, not a standard feature.

Sub-$1000 Lenovo N100/V100 notebooks have the option too. That's about as cheap as they get for integrated fingerprint reader

Of course but if its in his budget, a thinkpad would be the better option...

I'm not looking for the cheapest, nor the most expensive, just the best bang for your buck. Nobody has answered my question about the ram...

Also, I haven't seen any upgrade options for the hard drive, looks like something that I would have to buy and install myself.

Well you didn't exactly ask anything about ram.
But anyway, I would go with DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) since they are priced close enough. Actually, right now on newegg you can get 2GB DDR2 667 for $10 AR less than 2GB DDR2 533.

looks like somebody didn't read the second line of the OP

there's no reason to drop down to DDR2-4200 ram...there's no substantial price benefit.

about the hard drive, i don't think IBM offers any upgrade options to a 7200RPM drive. newegg has a couple good deals. what size were you looking for?

as for best bang for your buck, i would go with the Thinkpad line of laptops just because they're so reliable and well constructed. i had my eyes set on a D620 for a few weeks but i saw just too many negative reviews for the screen. my dad has a T60 and before that had another T-series laptop and the screens were both pretty good

about the hard drive, Lenovo Thinkpads have the option of a 100GB 7200rpm drive for $180; all of their other hard drive options are 5400rpm. you can check newegg for a couple good deals on hard drives.

true, he didn't specifically ask for any help, but one could easily infer that when someone states they're not sure about something, they would mind getting a little help or advice. didn't mean it any bad way...just pointing out he did at least throw the topic out there

I don't mean this in a bad way, but are you dense? I knew he was looking for help and I did offer him some advice.
I was merely pointing out the fact that he was complaining about no one answering his "question" when he never asked one. "I wasnt sure if it is best to get DDR2 5300 ram, or some cheaper ram, but I know I want 2GB" is NOT a question. I was just trying to be facetious and you obviously did not understand that.

I think that anything Lenovo is the best bang for the buck. The only question is do you want to get the consumer line, a fine group of machines, or do you want to go the business route and get a thinkpad? Its just a matter of quality: tpads are usually a little faster and a bit better built...

EDIT: Also, after getting a tpad with a 540 rpm 16 mb cache hdd, i can almost say that they are faster than 7200 rpm drives and much cooler running. In my opinion, 7200 rpm drives are extremely overrated and 90% of users would be better of with a 5400.

you can almost say, but you can't

there may be no significant boost in performance for a laptop user but you can't say the 5400 is faster

The fact is that modern 5400RPM drives offer much of the performance of 7200RPM drives. Once Seagate's Perpendicular 7200RPM drives hit next year that may change though!

I'd go with either a Lenovo T60p, Z61m, Z61p, or Dell M90 or D820. I just depends on what other options you want along with it. IBMs finger print software integrates nicely into the system and you can use it to prevent people from even booting the system. I haven't used Dells, so I can't really say what options you have.

Dell Latitude D620 for a midrange business notebook. Has the biometric reader integrated with TPM chip on the mb for encrypted hdd + fingerprint authentication and a windows software package. 15.4" lcd with varying resolution options. I think soon it will be availble with the Core 2 cpus. D820 for all of the above but more heavy-duty.

It's file and folder encryption... not full disk/volume encryption.
