that computer uses a desktop processor so i imagine it either has a heavy battery or it won't last long without one

i just ordered a laptop yesterday though.. i bought it from dell.com

i bought a referbished machine (comp's that people return within their 15 day time limit, which dell cannot sell as new) so they knock down the price a lot, and then there was a $150 off deal on the laptop i wanted (latitude cs) so i got a $3,000 laptop for $2,005 shipped ... here are the specs

Latitude CSx H500XT
Intel® Pentium® III Processor at 500MHz
13.3" XGA Active-Matrix Display
128MB RAM
12GB Hard Drive
24X Max Variable CD-ROM
56Kbps Capable Data/Fax Modem + Xircom 10/100 Ethernet PC card
Microsoft® Windows® 98 and Works Suite 2000
1-Year Limited Warranty ( 3 year's would have been 40 bucks more)

What are refurbished products?

A All of Dell?s new computers come with a 30 day total satisfaction policy. As a result of this policy, some computers are returned to Dell.

We disassemble and rebuild returned systems to original factory specifications, then put the systems through a rigorous testing program to ensure Dell quality. We even use brand new boxes for packaging! As a result of our fantastic refurbishment process, Dell Refurbished systems include the same 3-yr. limited warranty as new systems.

Additionally, Dell provides technical support for as long as you own your system.

Sure. Winbooks are cheap. Cheaply made. Cheap Company. Cheap Service.

Winbook sucks. I owned one. They screwed me up one side and down the other. I pulled it new out of the box and the hard drive burned up 8 hours later. Then the sent me a replacement hard drive mastered for the wrong operating system. So my new computer was 2 days old and I was installing a new operating system. Then the screen started flickering two months later. What should have taken a week took six weeks to fix. Then when the finally got it back to me, the screen wasn't fixed, and the 4 gig hard drive I sent them was replaced with a 2 gig.

And believe it or not...thats only the highlights. I left a LOT of Bull$#@% out. That company and that product sucks beyond belief. Pay more and buy a Dell. It might be more expensive, but it is WELL worth it. But at least if anything goes wrong they fix it quickly and correctly at no charge to you.

My advice would be (if you are not in a big hurry) to look CAREFULLY for clearance deals at the B&M (brick and mortar) stores. The office stores and other stores often clear out last years models very cheap when a new OS or a new model year comes in.

For example, I recently purchased (less than a month ago) an i-series IBM Thinkpad with a C466 Mobile CPU, 14.1" XGA TFT screen, 6GB HD, DVD, built-in lucent modem, trackpoint IV (thinkpad buffs know what that is), and 64MB of SDRAM for $1004.00. Tax was around $50, and I spent another $47 on the bay for another 64MB of ram because I really wanted 128MB on my laptop, bringing the grand total to around $1100. That deal is dead now, but it demonstrates that shopping the clearance racks at the B&Ms really can pay off.

If you really want to buy it online, I think there is also a $200 off $1000 rebate deal going that works for computers4sure and a couple other places that sell laptops. If you are willing to buy a new one from an individual, or if buying used is a consideration, you might try going to one of the online auction sites (NO, I am no longer hawking any ), as you can sometimes get really good deals there, particularly on laptops.

Good luck,

Nack

Clocker,

Modify the title to be more descriptive so that people don't waste their time looking at this when they are looking for a hot deal on a laptop.

To answer the question, getting a resellers license is not the best way to get a hot deal on ANY computer hardware. You'll find that most wholesale places cost MORE than most internet shops. Reason: Volume. You simply can't afford to order enough volume to get the deal down to a "hot" price.

Yes, occasionally you can find a deal with a wholesale vendor, but, given the same amount of time you could very well find a better deal online.

About the only way you save money is if you cheat on your state sales tax.

There are many other reasons to get a resellers license, but, in my experience, it's not for hot deals.

Look at the IBM I-Series, I have suggested it for some friends and relatives, and all have been pleased. Or if you know a student, the discounts can be huge. Our shool offers an IBM T20 (Titanium cover) with a P3-700, 128MB RAM, 12GB HD, DVD, 14.1" screen, 10/100 NIC, 56k modem, Win98, Office2000 Pro, extra software, lapptop backpack and security cable for $2500+tax. This laptop is under 5lbs and under 1.3" thick, they are tiny.

Here is my suggestion the Acer 602 TER, with careful shopping you should find one close to your budget. These are very powerful and featured for the money. 64mb ram, 12gb hd, CDRW, and long battery life. Last I knew they also had a coupon to upgrade the ram to 128 mb free. I looked pretty hard recently and couldn't find anything for the money to beat the Travelbook line for bang for the buck. To do your own research go over to cnet.

Zucchini-
It depends on your school. At my school they sell at least 1500 laptops every year, so we get a great price. I'd check your campus computer store and if they don't stock IBM, give IBM sales a call and tell them you are a student and see what they say.

I would stay away from winbooks... they are cheaply made... I totally believe Dell makes the best notebook computer. They have some cheap ones out too now.

I don't recommend the sony sr series, they are a tad too small. 10inch screen... you really have to go to a store that has these on display. Also the sr series don't have many things built in.. network/modem and it doesn't come iwth a floppy.
