I really don't know lol I'm not a doctor but he put it in simple terms for me

He said that the doc told him there was something wrong with his cornia that the laser could not just go straight through. They had to basicly sand off the top layer of his cornia then do the procedure. For 3 days he said his eyes burned, could not sleep, had to put stuff in his eyes (had the consistancy of vasoline) and was in extreme pain 24 hrs a day. After that he could see perfectly and said that 3 bad days was worth it all, because he had been wearing glasses his whole life.

Not trying to scare you away

I've had it done. They gave me valium 30 minutes before, numbed my eyes, and finished the procedure in 10 minutes. I could immediately see better, though there was some slight tearing from irritation. I spent the next 24 hours in a percocet/valium daze. Woke up the next morning without any pain, went back for the post-check, and tested 20/25 in the right and 20/15 in the left (from 20/725 and 20/700, respectively). No problems ever since (been upwards of 6 years).

Do you guys think Lasik is going to get any cheaper? Have they pretty much ironed out all the negative long term effects?

i had lasik done 8 yrs ago. no problems.

as to eLiTeGoodGuy, your father in law's experience is not typical of lasik procedures. any doctor that has to scrape cornea SHOULD inform the patient BEFORE doing the procedure how painful it will be etc.

this may or may not be pertinent to the OP's situation but don't act like your father in laws experience is the norm.

I'm waiting a couple of years before getting it done. It's been only 8 years that this procedure came out. So, I guess I rather wait a couple more years to see if people start to have any strange side effects

My vision was worse than 20/2000 back before march. 10 diopters off. March 2 I had my LASIK procedure. Now I have 20/15. that's better than "average"

I had it in 2001. my vision was 20/550, after it was 20/15 and I was 20 years old. Now I'm 25 and my vision is probably 20/20 - 20/25. The only side effect I had was starbursts around light sources when my eyes are dilated (at night). I don't even notice them anymore, hell, I'm not sure if it still even happens.

Some doctors say the flap heals ....some say it never heals. So im not sure myself, otherwise I would get it if they could prove it heals.

I'll be getting it on January 5th myself. $2900 for Custom Lasik w/lifetime enhancements. The only thing that worries me is that the flap never fully heals. It would take a pretty big blow to the eye to dislodge it after a year or so of healing, however, from what I've read.

Lasers in the Eye + me = No way (yeah...i am just too scared but again, I only have one pair of eyes and cannot afford to loose them )

One of our relatives is an eye surgeon and my father asker her opinion. She told him to not go for it now as there can be side affects. Again, this is from an eye surgeon who is a relative. My father so wanted to get Lasik done but after talking to her, he is just going to stick with glasses.

Again, I am not trying to scare anyone, this was just her opinion (and oh, she herself wears glasses also )

I had it done the day before Thanksgiving this year. Unfortunately mine didn't get corrected perfectly and I'll probably have to have it redone. I opted for the lifetime insurance on it though, which trust me is a good thing. I'm about 20/30 in both eyes now with trouble reading things clearly from more than a few feet away. The nighttime halo effect is annoying as hell too. I also definately recommend not watching anyone else have the procedure done right before you, I watched the person in front of me and when it was my turn I started panicking a little. I'm 26 btw and had it done at Lasikplus in Alpharetta, Ga.

I'd definately still do it again, but the fact that I don't see as good as I did while wearing glasses is quite aggrivating. Also the constant need for eye drops is a bit of a pain.

As far as the flap healing, it doesn't heal, because they can never cut it again, if you have to have it redone they wiggle it loose apparantly. And I don't know what my 20/whatever rating was before the surgery, but my prescription was about -7.0 in both eyes.

If Tiger Woods is willing to do it, it can't be all that bad. There haven't been any cases of reported blindness either.

I'm going to have one eye done at a time.

It does not cost anymore to do it this way

My explaination...

I was born blind.
I had eye surgery at the age of 3 or 4 yrs old to separate eye muscles. (~ 1964)
I was one of the first to have such an operation.
I still have a 'lazy eye' thou.
But, I could see !

I spent most of my childhood at the the University of Chicago optometry.

I saw Dr. Ernest ... 4 years ago on the news ... He still practices !
He handled my recovery and therapy after surgery

My father told me ... that when I had the patches removed...

... I looked at a magazine rack ... like I never seen one before ...

I received lasik about 3 years ago. So far so good. The procedure itself was a little nerve racking, but other than that, it wasnt all that bad. Some people can see fine right after surgery, but, for me, it took at least a day or two before I felt like my vision was correct. Your eyes will feel dry for like the first 6-7 months. I carried around eye drops where ever I went during that time. I see "halo's" over lights at night that were not there before, but it's no biggie. I can see my eyes have changed a tad since the surgery (eventhough I passed the driver's license vision test) so, I'm guessing I'm around 20/40, 20/60ish.

Big thing to remember is keep your eyes nice and wet and dont use Visine. I'd go with those lubricating eyedrops.
