Even if you don't know how to overclock, scrapping the socket939 is still in your best interest, I just went from a socket 939 Athlon 3700 to an E8400 this month.

You can spend $50 for a low end MB, $50-70 for a processor that will beat the pants off of anything you could get for the total cost of $130 for your socket939 mobo, and $30 for 4GB RAM and the system will last you for a while.

That's a pretty sweet deal - The Asus is AM3 qualified for an upgrade down the road.

An X2 7750 / 780g combo would be in the $150 range - with RAMs probably $190 or so.

OP, look for an Opteron 165 on the FS/FT forum. You should be able to score one for cheap, and overclocked it should keep up with a current budget processor, and will save you at least $100 in a platform upgrade.

It always happens when a socket dies. People try to max out their system to make it last longer and the prices shoot up.

yeah was funny, was so lopsided this summer that I swaped my 3800x2 setup with 2gb of ram, and got a AM2 setup with a BE2400, 790gx board and 4gb of ram and walked away with 20 bucks in my pocket after the deal, gained about 300mhz in OC and 2gb of ram, not a fantastic upgrade by any means, but the platform I changed to can upgrade to phenom II when released.

First off, do you live near a Fry's? IF so, they always have the best deals.

Example. They had the E7300 w ECS motherboard for $99 and the E5200/ECS for $79 a few days ago. They have AMD combos also (usually $69 and up, $69 gets you the 5000+ I believe)

If you don't live close to a Fry's. Try newegg. The best bang 4 the buck currently is the X2 4200+ ($36 w free shipping):

This is an OEM model so you do need a heatsink/fan also. If you don't have one already the 5000+ linked above is a good deal. As for overclocking, don't give up on it just because you can't match other people's claimed overclocks. Whatever you can get is free MHz. What matters (to most people) is that it is stable.

Why do you want that motherboard?

For me, there are two ways to shop for motherboard. The cheapest option that is stable, like those free ECS boards in the Fry's combo deals. Or, buy one with the features that you need

I don't know what features you are looking for but here are some:

Upgradeable.

That ASUS M3A78-CM that RedShirt recommended is a good choice. You might be able to use a Phenom II later on if you do want to upgrade cpus (I never trust claimed cpu compatability for cpu's that are not out yet). It costs only $6 more than the one you were looking at.

SATA ports. Do you have enough for all the drives you have/plan to have?

Maximum memory. You are already aware of that.

PCI slots.

Onboard video. Useful and can be disabled if you don't need it.

Maximum LAN speed: Some are 10/100 while others offer Gigabit

Onboard sound: There are better and worse options.

Holy crap, yeah, I just looked, there are only 1 or 2 FX-60 or FX-62's on EBay, and they're expensive as heck.

By the time you buy one of these, you could pretty much pick up a new mobo, CPU, and probably even RAM cheaper that will performance quite a bit better.

q9300 ($180) + 8GB of RAM ($100) + decent 775 mobo ($100)

Yeah, I dunno, these days doesn't make much sense.

AMD would have made a killing had they kept on making CPUs for S939.

I'm still running my Opteron 165; I recently got it up to 2.7ghz stable. I don't feel the need to upgrade my CPU yet. S939 is still going strong.

Naw, the prices would be in line with AM2 chips if they were still being made. It's basic economics in play here: combine moderate demand and very low supply and the price goes up. The only reason people are still buying these chips is because in many cases they're locked into an OEM system and don't want to rebuild completely & buy a new copy of the OS.
