Hello,

I don't post that often, and i've been reading a lot of posts on here, but I still need some help deciding. I'm interested in getting a LCD to replace this borrow crt monitor of mine, and i've been looking at a few models. I do a lot of web surfing, I do a lot of gaming, and I do watch anime/dvds on my computer. The main two models i've been thinking about are the Dell 2005fpw or the Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+. I remember the CES report from Tom's Hardware of a new LCD coming out from LG Electronics that featured their fEngine technology which enhances how the picture looked, and thought it was quite intriguiing so I would consider one of those as well. I do realize that the LG is a 12ms compared to the L90d+'s 8ms, and the dell being a i'm not quite sure ms. Any thoughts to help my decision? Widescreen sounds like it'd be nice, and I do know that some tweaking and what not is required to get some games to work in widescreen, which i'm fine with doing.

woohoo, im 50% of the vote so far- i only voted 2005fpw because its the only one of the above ive owned, im sure you cant go wrong with eitther the imagequest of the LG if they sport those specs but ive owned other 19" monitors before and im far more impressed with this 20" widescreen. ill admit though, it does have faintly noticeable ghosting but it doesnt bother me as much as some other LCDs ive seen esp. anything above 16ms. ive also heard that even the 8ms and 12ms have ghosting if you have really good eyes its just something you deal with when moving to an LCD, but once your at 16 or below its just plain pickyness it really doesnt affect gameplay in my opinion

If money doesn't matter, then the LG sounds good. With 12ms I don't think there will be much ghosting. fEngine does sound interesting, but I don't know how much better it really makes things look.

I'd still go with the L90D+ tho. $150 cheaper, colors seem good and ghosting should be almost zero. At least I don't see any.

nothing wrong with the L90D+. higher contrast ratio and brighter, faster response time, and $140 cheaper. It also has an 8-bit panel so the colors should be fine. looking at screenshots of fengine I actually prefer the one's it didn't touch. way too much contrast... it's definitely not going to make things look real. here's some screenshots I found with google.

about the Dell...it's widescreen and practically EVERYTHING is going to have to be scaled to fit and look crappy...bad for most applications, good for few...it also has a slightly slower 12ms. response time. unless you love widescreen, there's no reason to get the Dell over any other...

But, I haven't had personal experience with any of these...

I have only had my 2005fpw for a day now. Call of Duty looks a little funny but you don't have to run it in full screen mode. Games made for widescreen must look awesome. The Dell is a nice, crisp screen and is great because you can be browsing and still have IM's open and see them. What is also cool about the Dell and I did not know about it before I ordered, was that you can run in PIP or picture by picture mode, having any combination of two, analog, DVI, Svideo or composite - both one the one screen.

For my needs, the Dell works great.

Don't forget Dell has a good return policy whereas Newegg says 8 or more dead pixels.

The Hyundai L90D+ uses an 8-bit panel, which is 16.7 million colors. If it was 6-bit it would say 16.2M colors...
It uses an 8-bit Samsung LTM190EX panel.

Color Depth: Almost all LCDs today are 6-bit or 8-bit LCDs. This means that each subpixel - Red, Green, and Blue - can display one of 2 to the n shades where n represents the number of pixels. A typical 8-bit LCD can produce 256 shades per pixel, or 16.7M color combinations. A 6-bit LCD panel can display 64 shades per subpixel, and since there are three subpixels per pixel, the monitor can display 262,000 color combinations per pixel. This is generally OK for gaming, but certainly not acceptable for any graphics development. Personally, I enjoy seeing the other 98% of the 24-bit color spectrum.

How do you know it's 6-bit?

Personally, I'd rather have a monitor with this panel, though. Better viewing angle with PVA, better contrast, and same response time.

Edit: oops, that's 8ms. gray to gray A monitor that uses it (BenQ FP91E) lists 25ms. for Tr/Tf response time.

As we all know, there's a lot of misinformation around when it comes to LCD specs with some manufactureres being just as guilty as other sources (either knowingly or unknowingly - who knows). I trust both of these sites, and both list the monitor as having 16.2M colors.

That being said, if I was the original poster, I would buy this monitor over the others.

Oh, and the panel you said you would rather have. I believe that is the panel to be used in the upcoming Samsung 193Pplus which is also the one I'm holding out for (after I see it properly reviewed/evaluated).

2005FPW because I have one. I don't notice any ghosting, I'm too busy trying not to get killed ( I suck at FPS but love to play them).

Wide screen games look awesome. I think it scales nicely. I play Dumb III at 1280x1024 (cause there is no native widescreen support) with the monitor set to use aspect ratio so the image is centered on the screen. With 4X AA it looks very good.

I say the Hyundai, because you will know you have the fastest LCD on the market, and also some guy in an earlier forum fixed all of the sparkling problems that toms talks about with a driver update.

I agree. If you want to get a 19" one that's your best bet. Or the Acer 1912 or w/e it is it's going for $280 now, I have the 17" version and the monitor is amazing.

Had i known about this site before i bought my spectre Dcllcd 19" i would have grabbed that hyundai. My rez and stuff is similar but it beats my response time of 12ms and the price is about equal or less than what i paid through tiger direct. But im happy, not much ghosting and i got used to it pretty quick. And i was a "there is no monitor other than a CRT!" kind of person before.
