All,

Excuse my lack of knowledge on refresh rates and games. I was thinking of buying a new LCD monitor (ViewSonic VG700) to replace my CRT monitor at home (Viewsonic 17GA). Some people told me not to because they are no good for playing games. I am a light game player; would the LCD really impact the performance of my games? (Video is only a GeoForce IIMX 400).

Thks in advance for any input!

Well of course it wont be as good as the crt, but there are a few brands of lcd's that are pretty darn good. Im a gamer and use crt, I will move to lcd one day (possibly sometime this year), Nobody seems to be much help when it comes to lcd (people just seem to tell me pros and cons of different lcd's )

Go down to bestbuy or compusa in your area they sometimes have the latest LCD hooked up for games, my local bestbuy has the Samsung 191T hooked up and I played every demo they had and saw no ghosting, then I went to comp and played on a sony they had for games and it was really bad for ghosting, good luck

I have the Dell UltraSharp 1900FP 19" Flat Panel LCD Monitor. I went from a (1 year old) Sony 19" G420S Trintron to this LCD monitor and I love it. This is the first LCD monitor that I have ever bought, as I've only had it for 3 months.

As for gaming, this monitor is pretty good. When purchasing a lcd monitor the one thing that drew me to the dell 1900 fp is The higher contrast ratio generates sharper, crisper lines and images. Fast response times provide superior clarity for moving images with "no ghosting". I play a lot of FPS and I'll admit ghosting is prevalent but it's kept to a minimum. I've gotten used to it anyway, so it's not really a big deal.

So what you want to keep in mind when purchasing a LCD monitor is:

1) Don't buy a lcd monitor that is under 17". If you can get one that is 19" or bigger. My lcd monitor's screen size is up there with a 21" CRT.
2) Is ghosting a big issue? How badly does the LCD monitor ghost when playing a FPS game?
3) Get both a Analog/Digital DVI output. If your video card supports DVI then go digital.

I guess that's it. This monitor kicks major ass. Check it out. You might want to purchase this monitor if you can aford it, or pay small monthly payments. It's a good deal either way.

good luck...

Speaking very broadly, if you are a LIGHT gamer, a current model LCD will be a great asset to you.

Like tec699 I think 18-19" is a worthwhile investment - but its your budget. I think that DVI is a prerequisite though - it really crisps things up - so if it doesn't have digital input, I would pass on it.

I have a Viewsonic (and very happy) but note reviews of analog-only models seem less stellar than my unit.

ALL-

Thks for your input. I will make a trip to the stores and check them out in person. My only reason for going with an LCD was the space issue in the room where my PC is. I may just move the room around and get an flat tube crt monitor. My big thing with the LCD's is the price. If I go with LCD I will take all your advice into consideration.

People on these boards are the best!!
THANKS!

I switched from CRT to LCD last year - Viewsonic VX900 and haven't looked back since! I have noticed some light ghosting while playing games but, the trade off in deskspace, heat generation and mobility is well worth it in my opinion. Games like UT2003, Max Payne and Soldier of Fortune play great. If you are a student I highly reccomend you check out Dell's higher education section, you can often times get great deals on LCD from them.

Until I start reading posts exclaiming LCD technology is equal to or better than CRTs for gaming I ain't switchin'. My eyes deserve the very best!
