my friend is buying a PS3 and wants to get a display for it.

What are the differences between LCD TVs and Monitors aside from size?

For a PS3 do you want a TV or Monitor? Are respnse times, input lag, ghosting, display type (IPS etc....) all issues just as with buying a LCD monitor for a PC?

Why are TVs cheaper than the LCD monitors in terms of pound-for-pound or by the inch? Is a 24" high end monitor somehow better than a small 24" LCD TV?

Any recommendations for a $600 - $800 LCD TV to go with a PS3? Or maybe a monitor?

I cannot answer all of your questions but I will do my best to help you with your choice. Generally monitors offer higher resolutions, sometimes at the loss of some contrast, tv tuners, inputs and speakers. This tv, the highly rated Westinghouse LTV-32W6 32" LCD HDTV TV Widescreen HDMI can be had on ebay for $550 new, though with $100 dollar shipping. Kinda risky, but otherwise your paying $800. You can get an amazing lcd monitor for your price range but usually 24" or lower. If your gonna go the t.v. route then your looking at 27'' and up in your price range, which will net you a nice t.v.

He will need an HDCP-compliant 1080p television to get the full PS3 experience.

What advantages do monitors have over LCD TVs?

I mean you can run them at even higher rez than 1950 x 1080 (1080p) but rarely do. So aside from that, are they basically the same - just smaller?

Also, when looking at 24" monitors for my PC, i tended to find larger screens slower and more prone to ghosting, input lag, and other issues as compared to smaller ones. In fact 24" LCD monitors were in Oc. still a bit slow for my tastes. So won't big screen tvs be even slower?

But are PS3 graphics or movies so much less demanding than PC games that the slower screens won't matter?

I have the Samsung LNS-2351W for my PC and PS3.

The monitor does everything it needs to do. The screen size in Windows is 1366x768. Most newer games support 16:9, so you won't have to worry about game squishing. The only one that I can think of that doesn't is LOTR:BFME. Damn EA.

While on the PS3, it can go up to 1080i. All the games look really, really nice.

The TV is around 700 bucks or so. I bought last year for 800 and haven't regretted my decision.

A 24" LCD Monitor that has HDCP and supports 1:1 scaling is superior to anything you can get in the same size on the TV side. You'll get 1080p with each pixel mapped perfectly and it'll be a much better PC solution as well. The only argument from the LCD TV camp is that you can get a larger 32"+ LCD TV that can do 1080p for a bit more money.

Support for 1:1 1080p on the 24"s was a bit flakey at first but it seems like most are supporting it well out of the box now. The ones that do 1:1 for sure that I know of are the Dell RevA04, The Gateway and the BenQ WZ and VW. The 24" panels that can do 1:1 are really a value cross-over niche right now imo for those interested in consolidating their PC and TVs in a multimedia HD environment in a moderately-sized room.

I can tell you from experience that at 32 inches, you won't really benefit from 1080p. I own the Westinghouse 32w6. It is 1360x768, but I don't notice the pixel structure or SDE. Games and movies of course look gorgeous. It also doubles as my computer monitor. Text and photos are extremely crisp. I am very conscious about screen displays too. He can also get the Westinghouse 37" model, but it is over $1000.
