Ask anyone who does graphics work or photo editing, where color accuracy is important if they would consider using a LCD. You will likely be laughed at. Want to venture a guess as to what they use at Pixar, ILM and pretty much all of the other CGI graphics workshops? CRTs.

Also, while the LCD proponents crow about 8ms response times (even though the LCDs aren't truly reaching that). Even the cheapest CRTs have response times of less than 1ms.

For the majority of average users who mainly use their PCs to web browse and send email, LCDs are great, they take up less space, they're lighter etc. But when it comes to image quality its no contest.

I'll buy an LCD when they offer:

Accurate color reproduction
No ghosting
The ability to use non native resolutions without issues

Naustica, most people switch to LCD when their existing CRT monitors need replacing (or they get infatuated with the new display toy everyone is buying.) In general you don't get a new monitor when you don't need a new monitor. After all, good 20 inchers don't come cheap.

Don't get me wrong. I love it that people are buying LCDs left and right. The panel makers are scrambling with R&D.....doing whatever they can to build it better and cheaper. And since the technology is in it's infancy, I am sure we have just scratched the surface. I remember when CD players were introduced they sold in droves. People laughed at turntables. It didn't matter that their CDs sucked (and they did). I waited five years to buy my first CD player. I figure I got a couple more years to wait in the world of LCD PC monitors or whatever they get replaced with.

So .. help me decide here? I like having the tv on while I'm surfin the net. I sorta watch the tv out of the corner of my eye's.

How would the quality of the picture compare between the Dell and the Benq?

I don't need speakers since I'm hooked up to 100 watt per channel amp. to full size 3 way speakers.

Thanks
Cowboy

I cannot get into detail on IQ between the two because I dont own either one.

But both being 1080 compliant is the biggie. From what ppl have said the 2405 has better IQ than the 2005, and so I can tell you its more than likely exceptional if its better than this screen.
Ackmed could prob tell you more, but I know hes entirely happy with it.
I'm just imagining... but I have a hard time picturing anyone unhappy with a 24" 1080 HD compliant LCD on their PC..
The BenQ 37" I'm sure is just fine I'm sure, the 2405 dell is a benQ panel as well!

There are only a few major manufacturers of actual LCD panels.
Just like the tire industry, all of them are made by a handful of companys that slap everyone elses name on them.

That said, basically quality depends on the individual panel.. not the company who makes it.. it really doenst matter if its a LG or BenQ..
You are prob going to get decent IQ out of any LCD besides the old ones.

Sorry I cant help here more on comparing the two screens. Plenty of ppl can tell you about the 2405, but I dont think anyone has that 37" yet.. its on backorder at Crutchfield I believe even.

But generally speaking, I dont think there will be any major quality difference, per se. One might have a brighter rating ect than the other.. but it really comes down to how much you want to pay and how big you want to go.

Samsung supplies panel used in Dell 2405. I don't believe Benq makes any panels, just LCDs.

Got a question for ya?

Why would you want the NEC when these are the spec's?

Samsung - 1100DF 21IN 20VIS .20MM-20X15 FLAT COLMON BLK
The Samsung SyncMaster 1100DF is a 21-inch CRT monitor that delivers true precision from the flattest tube available. Utilizing Samsung's DynaFlat display technology, it delivers a 0.20mm dot pitch, 2048 x 1536 resolution, scanning frequency of 30-121KHz horizontal and 50-160Hz vertical, and Smart III Anti-Glare and Anti-Static surface treatment.

NEC MultiSync FE2111SB-BK 22in CRT Monitor Black
Screen Size: 22" actual Size 20" Viewable Size.
Screen Surface: Multi-layered Anti-Static Dark-tint screen Anti-reflective OptiClear.
Dot pitch: 0.24MM.
Front Panel control: Exit left/right adjust +/- Select reset.

Seems to me the Samsung would be a better choice and cheaper also?

While that Samsung is nice, don't let the .20mm dot pitch fool you. Samsung is being deceptive and quoting you the horizontal dot pitch. The vertical dot pitch is lot higher. The .24mm dot pitch on the NEC is the vertical dot pitch. Vertical dot pitch is the standard most companies use except Samsung. Samsung is trying to trick people into thinking their monitor has better dot pitch than the competition when it doesn't.

The NEC is Aperture Grille based CRT. Samsung one is Dynoflat which is type of Shadow Mask. Most AG is completely flat. Dynoflat is not really flat but has lens on top of the screen to give the impression of flat screen and to correct for distortion. If you look in the corners you can see the curves.

That said some people prefer AG monitors and others Shadow Mask. I prefer AG due to color vibrancy, brightness, and flatness. But some people can't stand the two faint horizontal lines on the screen and they prefer the softness and the text clarity of Shadow Mask. It's up to the individual preference.

Believe me, you don't notice the lines unless you look for them. I've used a NEC at work for about three years and my new NEC/Mitsu lines are even fainter. If I thought the lines were a bother, I would have never purchased the NEC/Mitsu. A non-issue, IMO. Regarding the difference between the two CRTs.....that's a good question. Seems like one has a slightly greater screen resolution than the other.

A guy in hotdeals said that it was an actual benQ panel.. I'm curious what it is if it isnt.

I can't pull up the 2405 spec page (that lists the maker) for some reason.
But I think you are right that it is a Samsumg, I think they are the only ones that make a 24"

we had a thread around here with the producers of all of Dells panels but i cant find it

thx for the info, I gotta get this all straightened out on who makes what!
not that it matters, but i care

It's pretty geeky but pretty cool.

BTW, I can't help but chuckle to myself at the continual CRT bashing. One thing that people forget is that I literally had one of the best LCD monitors and best CRT monitors side by side, both new and made the choice.....and an easy choice it was. I'm almost sure people are comparing old, used up, curved suface CRTs (not to mention it is just in their mind's eye, not reality) to the new LCDs. They are not seeing what I'm seeing. They are not doing the direct comparison. There is something fun and satisfying about going against pop-culture.....and knowing at the same time you have a monitor that crushes LCDs in imaging and just about everything else.

Hadsus, check my rig. I've been running my dual LCD/CRT monitor setup for almost 2 years now. I prefer my LCD for majority of the stuff although I prefer the CRT for movies and certain games. Don't assume people are not doing direct comparisons. Most people who switched to LCDs early had nice CRTs. What do you think they were using before the LCD?

I agree. When I first changed to a LCD (1800FP) I have a very nice 19" Sony Trinitron. I was pretty happy with it, but kept on hearing people rave about the 1800FP. So I got one, and side by side, EVERYONE who saw them, said the LCD looked better. I didnt realize how washed out, and just "bleh" the CRT looked. I tried running dual, but found I just didnt like the CRT anymore. That any it screwed with my speaker placement.

I havent had a CRT as my main monitor for well over 3 years. 1800FP, 2001FP, 2005FPW, and now a 2405FPW.

I think someone said get this one Link

instead of this one? Link

Can anyone explain why?

What is the biggest and baddest CRT out there?

I was the one who said that, the reason is that the 2141 pushes 2048x1536@85Hz while the 2111 can't handle 2048x1536 natively at all. IMO if you are going to get that close to the top tier for consumer level CRTs, just spend the extra few bucks. King of the hill for CRTs would be hard to say, likely the SGI C220 which uses the same tube as the FP2141/2070(the SGI has higher level of tuning) for a short while. Mitsu/NEC stopped making CRTs- without them in the market there isn't a lot worth talking about at least in the realm of consumers.

Naus- 2405's panel is indeed made by BenQ

"2405FPW / DELL? - BenQ

BenQ Corporation
We hereby declare that this device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules.
Operation is subject to the following two conditions : "
source, thx rockit

So both are made by BenQ (the 37" and the 2405)

are you getting a 27" if dell puts one out?

ive been debating this, but decided i wont because it will be higher res than the 2405 and I dont want to go over single link dvi limits.. just too much pain as the panel ages and I move it to older rigs that will def have single link dvi cards in them.
and i want a screen that will work with my cards i have today..
1920x1200 is enough resolution to push in games, i dont need anymore any year soon.

1080 compliant and perfect for single link cards, and bigger than any readily available consumer CRT  Always a plus when the CRT fanboys come out of the backwoods with their 19 and 20" viewables

LOL, more pop-culture peer-pressure motivated ramblings of an LCD owner. As if 20" inches viewable isn't already enough. With your face no more than a foot and a half from the screen, it is too funny to see people scrambling for more screen real estate than they'll ever need. And with retinal popping brightness to fill your field of view and a mere 18 inches away, I'd hate to see your eyes in a few years from now. Well, actually I would......to see your eyes shrink the size of pinpricks. Maybe you can post some screenies of yourself.

Your face is probably 1 1/2 feet from your screen; not like you have much of a choice, with the depth of any large CRT. LCD users actually have the option setting their monitor a few feet away.

Your rationalizing is so pathetic; now anyone that wants a monitor larger than 20" is "peer-pressure motivated". :disgust:

My point isn't that the distances are different. It's that with the widescreen LCDs they are now to the point of filling your field of view (which to me is kinda wierd)....and your FOV is filled with an image that is way more bright than is natural. I look at my CRT then I look off somewhere else....and the relative brightness of those two views are roughly similar. Look at your LCD then look off to something else in your room. Wildly different brightness. I'm not just smack talking.....I really think that staring at 24" widescreens for long periods at close distances might have consequences. Just for the simple fact that it is unnatural for your eyes....just like LCD images are unnaturally bright (not to mention inferior to quality to a CRT like mine). But, hey, enjoy.

Cowboy, the LCD fanbois are a giggling buncha small children who see the 24" widescreen as a toy. They gush over how great it is. They are not smart enough to know how inappropriate it is. I have a widescreen, ya know. It's 55". It's a high def TV. What do you do with it? You watch DVDs and hi-def programming with it that's what! Movies are widescreen, HDTV is widescreen. Widescreen LCD monitors are nothing more than the LCD fanboi's bizzare wet dream. Impractical and kinda funny to visualize actually. 24" across with their face 18 inches away......reading text, web pages....yeah that's something that is next to impossible with an ordinary screen, duh. The only thing its practical for is widescreen games. Otherwise itsa wasta good eyesight and makes little sense in practice.

Ok, I'm over the top but it was fun.

*pops head into thread*

Has this turned into an immature pissing match yet, like LCD vs. CRT threads always do?

Yep, sure has. I'll just be leaving now...
