Is refurbished just another way of saying "open-box" (ie. customer return)?

If its just a customer return, I'm in for this deal.

It can be. It can also mean it was a user who bought the card, tested to see how far it would overclock, and then not being pleased with the results, returned it. Sometimes this means the card is damaged and won't run properly. I don't know if they even test the cards to see if they work, they just take whatever cards they get and sell them as refurbs.

Its luck of the draw really, sometime you might get a good one, other times not.

For video cards, I've heard that most people don't get good ones from Newegg, but I've never dealt with it personally, so I don't have firsthand knowledge to offer.

Gotta wonder why someone would return a brand-spanking-new product like this, unless this is the runoff from enthusiasts RMAing cards that don't O/C to their satisfaction.

Why not just RMA the card? Sure add a little extra for shipping to manufacturer, but it's still a cheap gtx

They're worth a try, if they dont work you can exchange them for a new one thru the egg free of charge.

maybe a bunch of people bought these for SLI but then they couldn't fit it in their mobo? (isn't there a mobo where 2x leadtek cards can't fit?)

I bought a 6800GT refurb from newegg awhile ago and it was definatley an open box return. The thing was all garbled on boot, the a-holes at newegg didn't even bother to run a basic test on it. Factory refurbed my a$$. NEVER buy a refurb from chiefvalue or newegg, unless you like the hastle of RMAing products and paying restocking/shipping fees. NIB is not much more, just suck it up and you wont have to worry about a 75% chance of returning the damn thing. I learned the hard way, hopefully I can save some of you some trouble.

I bought a 6800GT (Leadtek) refurb from Newegg. It works on most games, the problem was that I have had to back it down in speed from STOCK speeds to get it stable in other games. It will freeze in WOW after an hour or so. If I TAB out and TAB back in, after waiting a few minutes, I can play for a while.

I am going to make some case changes to see if I can keep it cooler, but it goes to 74C + under load and that seems to be the issue. Once it is under 72 I don't have problems.

You just have to be careful about which products you buy. I bought a refurb asus board from them and it runs flawlessly
