Sort of funny that we're getting RD790 info when AMD 690G (aka ATI RS690) hasn't even been reviewed yet with production level hardware/software.

I could almost forgive AMD/ATI if the 690G boards soon to be release were going to be really RD790 based...or, RD790 was only a month more away or something like that...

Lets see...if RD790 is as late as RS690 was, that'd be about Jan. 2008 instead of mid-2007 that we'll see RD790....

RS690 is late only because of patent problems, mobo have been ready to ship for a long time now

The last spin of A12 silicon was rumored to just have happened, so I don't think AMD 690/ATI RS690 has been ready for a while. There's no way a new chipset product could have been delayed as long as 690 has...if it were just licensing, ATI and/or AMD would have dropped some $$$$$$ to make that problem go away, as delaying a product like 690 for so long (it's been like 5 months since the first planned release and still nothing) costs serious money.

If you don't believe me, just go check out all the AMD machines at any B&M store...most of them will be running on nVidia 61x0 based boards with the integrated video. Considering that 690 ought to handily beat nVidia 61x0 integrated video, that's a whole heck of a lot of lost sales...

I fear that, providing AMD can deliver 790 products in mid-2007, 690 is going to be one of those products that simply missed its time to shine...

Not that I'm not desperately waiting for it to hit, I've got like 4 builds planned around it...

Same here, I'd like to build a few IGP systems around it, but the upcoming motherboards I've heard of so far are cheap and kind of boring. If Asus could re-release M2N-VM DH with a 690G core it'd be just great.

Actually Metr0, after thinking about it more and reading some
more bits and pieces from other sites...

...I honestly think it wasn't a hardware or patent problem for hardware
of patent problems sake...

...I just have this strong hunch that AMD for some reason let RS690
slip, slip, slip, and slip some more on purpose so nVidia could either
make more $$$ with nForce 61x0, clear out their nForce 61x0 inventory,
or most likely both.

I think just really taking a step back and thinking about it, and
knowing that the Leadership people at AMD who manage getting a chipset
like RS690 out the door would never let it slip by this much if it was
really wanted internally by them to be out, one cannot arrive at another
position.

The ATI (now AMD) X1250 chipset for Intel systems is exactly the same as
RS690, except it's obviously for Intel chips (thus needs a memory
controller, etc.), and it's been out - although not used except by NEC
PC's in Japan - for a while now. All AMD had to do was make the Intel
version work with AM2 CPU's, that's it.

Given that, and also how RS690 is supposed to be a near drop in solution for the current ATI RS48x motherboards, I just cannot see rationally how this chipset could be so late. There's no way AMD couldn't make a patent problem go away, especially if it's just getting the product HDCP certification.

Something else is going on here other than hardware/software issues or patent problems...those may be the cover story, or what was allowed to happen, but no way is that purely the reason for this thing to have been delayed for so long.
