Looks like OLED isn't happening any time soon until they can break build them at a consumer level price.

The economy crash might affect some high end product launches.

OLEDs are coming up now. A lot of manufacturers are likely in waiting mode until they arrive. They spank LCDs, even LED backlit ones, in pretty much every way save cost atm.

Subjective that I can play the game and not have to stare straight on with the screen at the exact height at which the monitor sits?

Viewing angle vs speed. When push comes to shove, I'll take speed every time in a display. The fastest TNs are still noticeably behind CRTs, S-PVS/S-IPS are slower still. Can't wait until we can get the best of both worlds for newer displays when OLEDs hit, then the only way they will be inferior to CRTs is resolution flexibility.

Actually they are significantly cheaper to produce, you can just PRINT them... but the cost is high due to lack of scale... new manufacturing plants have to be built, and so on...
and because people are willing to pay it...
But once the infrastructure is done, an oled will be significantly less costly to build.

And yea, the reason LED LCDs are catching on is because we already have OLEDs on the market which are vastly superior in every way shape or form... And it costs less than 3000$ for an oled monitor ALREADY (remember plasma came out at 20k a TV)...
so companies are pouring all their research money into OLED improvements rather then rushing to implement LED backlit LCDs... but there are a few already on the market.

Actually, LED is coming to PC monitors this year. But LED is just a gimmick anyway, it's still just plain LCD with no improvement except power savings, and does anyone here care about power savings? Quad SLI, 30" monitors, upgrading every 6 months...I don't think we're the target audience for green marketing

OLED/SED will be here before we get LED backlights with enough elements to make local dimming not look like crap.

Methinks quite a few of the posters in the older portion of this thread don't know the difference between response time and input lag.

To my knowledge LED lighting would do the same as a polarizer except the latter increases viewing angle by removing the extreme angle hazy blacks in IPS screens.

I garner this by the fact that the 24" Apple LED still seems to suffer from IPS viewing angle issues that the NEC LCD2690/3090 do not suffer from.

The Apple 24" LED is only for the newest mac books anyway, it uses a proprietary mini-DP port. Right now no one in the market produces a DVI, HDMI, or even a DP to mini-DP converter so its basically excluded from most of the market.

It's too bad though. If I had a choice I'd lean towards the Apple 24" over high end NEC offerings. The former would look slightly worse but for the silent gamer, the external power brick is a godsend. The NEC monitors are just noisy suckers.

LED lighting does the same thing as CCFL lighting, except with lower power consumption and (apparently) the possibility of a wider color gamut.

The other thing people would like it to do is local dimming, but as of now that feature 1) is only available on 47"+ TVs and 2) looks like crap.
