Hi guys! Long time no post. Anyways, I'll be leaving to China in 2 weeks and I'm looking for a laptop. I've narrowed it down to Lenovo Thinkpads. I noticed on Newegg there are some models that say "Equipped with Thinkpad Shock-Mounted Hard Drive" while there are other models that don't. There doesn't seem to be an extra charge for that protection. What are your experiences with the shock protection?

Here is the computer I'm referring to.

My other question is warranty service when out of country. Will I have to send it back to my friends or family in the US and have them deal with it or can I ship it for repair from China.

Last question is will this be good enough to play basic games like WoW? Maybe it's a good thing if it won't be able to handle it as this is a business trip. Thanks in advance.

Are you comparing Thinkpad R61's and T61's? T series does have a few features over R series and that may be one of the features. If you are only looking at the T61, all of them have a "Shock-Mounted Hard Drive."

The Intel x3100 will be able to play it. The GMA950 can even run WoW

I was comparing just the T61s. For some reason Newegg will list some T61s with Shock Mounted Hard Drive and some without. That's why I thought some models don't come with it. I was about to buy the computer in the link until I saw the 4 Cell battery. I would like to buy the computer directly from Lenovo.com but I'm leaving in about a week. I wanted to order from Newegg because I live very close and it will get delivered within 2 days which will give me about 3 days to play around to see if everything is alright before I take it overseas.

My T-60 has a shock mounted HDD. It places the drive caddy between two, soft rubber side rails. It really is no big deal, but a nice feature. My sense on laptops (I've had 5 of them) is that the most fragile component is the LCD screen. I see that cracking before damage to any HDD in case of a drop.

Ordering from Lenovo can be as fast as NewEgg. My T60 was delivered two weeks early - it was sent by air from Hong Kong.

If you are going to China, how about taking delivery over there? Might save some taxes.

Every THinkPad made in the 60 series has the active protection system and the silly shock protection rails.

Please elaborate on "silly." The rubber rails work just fine for me - they do dampen vibration and noise.

I'm just saying.. they are just rubber side caps... I'm sure they help or they wouldn't be there.... Silly perhaps was mis-used.... Overly simple would have been better.

OK - I understand. Sometimes a simple solution is the best. Of all the laptops I have owned (5), the Lenovo HDD mounting system - caddy with soft rubber side rails - is the most efficient for user access to remove and replace. Just one single screw!

I compare that with my HP Pavilion d1000 - which has a 90 degree pin adapter plus the caddy and two screws for access. Lenovo wins. Simplicity rules.

I won't even mention those that require keyboard removal for access to the HDD.

Cheers!
