LOL Laust,
Fair enough. For me personally, a fine wine, a good cigar, a hot chick and a fine auto are a lot alike. None are cheap, but can be worth it. Now if I ever get them all together--- WOO HOO

Since owning my Subaru Forester, I have yet to see any of these vehicles compete with Subarus in the snow (yes I know, I'm a guy and i drive a lesbian car). Particularly deep snow (probably has more to do with relatively thinner tires).

I must add however, NFS4 always seems to have the car choices right on the money.

<< And before anyone tries to tell me an SUV isn't a truck, I have driven them. Heavy, poor road feel, center of gravity too high. It's just physics. If that doesn't mean anything to you thats great, because you're spending the money. I'll see ya on the road. >>

The Highlander is faster, quieter, better handling, better riding than my Camry and almost as fuel efficient as my Camry (24MPG vs 29MPG highway). Not to mention that it has oodles more room and cargo space.

Car based sport-utilities are just that, very car like. Truck based sport-utes are what you are describing and in many cases is very much the truth. That being said, an X5 would put a hurtin on 85% of the sedans on the road.

You guys are still going!! I just read through all the ones I missed, thanks for all the comments, esp. Windogg who actually owns an X5. (You also NFS4 for all the posts..) Anyways, last I heard the BMW salesman has contacted my Dad to talk to him, so I'm not sure what's up there.

My Mom wants the Bimmer b/c it has the option where it beeps when you're backing up and something is in the way. hehe. I think this has something to do with the fact that both me and my brother have damaged previous vehicles by backing into other cars, twice for me, once for my brother Not that I'm at home much anymore, but I think she's a little sensitive.

Anyways, I told my Dad all the points you guys made. The BMW guy has already gone down $2000, while Lexus would only take off $800. Also, in looking around it seems that the BMW holds its value better in resale, which is a huge factor. So I'm not sure what he's going to spring for. There's a $13,000 difference, so I don't know. I'll keep you posted though when the deal goes down, maybe put up some pics

NFS4- Remember that's $13,000 CDN. So about $8000 for you Americans. What's the difference? Well, ummm, leaving debate about quality, suspension/engine/drivetrain etc. build, just in features: electronic telescoping steering column w/ memory, interior motion detector, Heated seats all round, steptronic transmission, DSC, HDC (Hill descent control- not alot of good in the Prairies), memory seats for both sides, Montana leather. I think those are the main option differeces between it and the RX300, oh and the 17" rims to the 16" on the Lexus. So it's really not alot more than the RX300 Luxury.

there's little doubt that most of that $13000 is for the name. I guess it's up to anyone whether that's real value in the end, i.e. resale, or not.

<< Now how about them Chrysler ML320s.... Heheh J/K folks! >>

LOL, funny stuff.

1) Actually, the M-Class was designed, built, and sold before the Chrysler merger.
2) The M-Class is more "off-road" capable than the sport-oriented X5. It also has a sturdy frame (instead of unibody)

<< What's the difference between the Toyota Highlander and the RX300 apart from the differences in look??

Why would you get a RX300 when the Highlander is the same thing? I'm pretty sure the Highlander uses the same quality of materials as the RX300.
>>

There's a difference. The Lexus has a lot of convenience features built in along with a higher quality switchgear (not by much) and superiour dash and gauge cluster, dual power seats with memory (Highlander only has power driver's seat), interior dust particle filtration system, and electrochromatic rear view mirror with built in compas. Leather is of higher quality, and the RX300 also has real wood trim (plastic on the Highlander). The RX300 also has an optional DVD navigation system.

Warranty on Highlander is 36/36,000. Warranty on the RX300 is 48/50,000. So there IS a difference.
>>

Is that difference worth the increase in price?? I'm pretty sure you don't really need a long warranty for a Toyota, it doesn't need one. Our Corolla never had a problem (apart from the dang muffler, but that was minor) and it was driven hard.

I'd suggest the Highlander, the Pathfinder, or go all out and get the Sequoia..hehe.

But b4 all of this...let your parents decide..they are paying for it..not us.

The X5 is just a regular 5 series on stilts. And also it's AWD is pretty crappy. If you can afford the 4.4 V8, atleast it offers you performance. The 3L V6 is just for posuers. You are better off buying the RX300 in that case. The Highlander and MDX (a bit chintzy interior though) are also good for the money.

I like BMWs so I'd go with the X5. Of course if I were looking to buy an SUV and I had that kind of money, I'd buy a real SUV (one that can go off-road with style). Then again, if I had that kind of money, there's no way in heck I'd buy an SUV. I'd buy an M3.

hey thought I'd leave an update here. Well the buying plans have been temporarily suspended. My younger brother (17) just went to the doctor with swelling and pain in his leg. They did some preliminary testing etc. and have now referred him to a specialist. Apparently they are worried about the possibility of cancer, so he's booked for further testing near the end of Feb

anyways, this kind of knocked vehicle buying of the top of my parents list until they find out whether this this is going to be serious or not. Hopefully it will end up being benign, and life will go on as usual...

Woah dude, sorry to hear that. Hope things turn out okay...

I just got a call from my mother this weekend, and my uncle and her decided they wanted X5's. I don't get it. I mean, yeah I don't earn the money, but if I did, wouldn't you want the best deal out there? They are both getting X5's over the MDX (I did everything I could to convince them to go with the MDX), even though they end up paying more and getting less. MDX, fully loaded is around $41k, the X5, with a few options (that basically come standard in the MDX) comes out to around $44.5k. Only thing they are really buying is the name and the looks... service maybe (probably not reliability) etc.

Sorry to hear about your brother Kenazo. I hope everything goes well for you and your family.

After shopping for the last month and a half with a pal, I just wanted to toss in another vote for the MDX. Get your dad to at least take it for a test drive. At
under 41k USD with navigation, it can't be beat.

Given the choice of the RX300 or the X5, and I would take the X5. I've driven the X5, and rode in the RX300 for over 2 hours. The Lexus was clearly designed for women, while the X5 screams performance.
