IMO,
I've always considered life after death as a variant of Pascal's wager,
with three possible outcomes....
1) death/no afterlife -
die and rot....
pretty straightforward, no consequences (even for Bin Laden)
eat, drink and be merry......
2) death/reincarnation -
come back as something/someone else,
status varies according to pre-death behavior -
cause for concern (who wants to come back as a roach?)
but outcome is not irrevocable - is correctable in next life
3) death/judgement -
most immediate consequences for pre-death behavior -
the three big religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity)
fall into this group.....
outcome is irrevocable......
I choose to bet on option 3 because, frankly,
given an equal chance of all outcomes occurring,
I have less to lose if option 3 is not true -
and what I do lose is either moot (option 1)
or correctable (option 2)
and given that Islam considers Jesus to be a prophet
(sucking up to Him, as it were)
and that Judaism doesn't rag on Him overmuch either,
Christianity seems to be the best of the 3 sub-choices
from a betting standpoint....
