BlueScreenVW,
I mean that engaging in one's normal activities can help to an extent, but you are correct in stating that a person who is already deep down will have great difficulty. Unfortunately, if a person is already considering suicide as a way out, he is probably too far into it to be able to partake in those activities. Depression is a terrible downward spiral, and as it gets worse, the situations it causes only feed the depression.
I don't believe that anyone should wait until they are willing to take antidepressants. My unwillingness to begin taking the drugs came within a hair of ending my life.

Check here for another topic dealing with the subject. I am that anonymous poster; since then, I have learned to overcome the social stigma of depression and other mental illnesses. When I wrote that initial post, I truly believed that I had beaten my illness; it wasn't until Paxil helped my regain my former life that I realized how far gone I still was. Only recently did I remember that good weather, interesting shows on TV, an engaging activity, or simply being with people who care about you can actually put a person into a good mood. Depression is a devastating illness; it amazes me every day how much it was able to destroy my memories of how enjoyable life can really be.
