Linksys Router

Ok, here is the deal, i have the BEFSR41 4 port Linksys router.... well... I have had it for about a year, and pretty much, have always had this problem... When i go into setup, basically 50% of the time the router locks up and then i have to restart the router and the computer... I called linksys and those num nuts told me i had to clear my internet history and files.... that obviously wasn't it, anyone have some ideas?

Hmm.. pretty wierd problem. I have that router as well and so far no such problems. Have you tried upgrading the firmware?

I will tell you this right now. Every single person I know that has bought that router, including myself, has brought it back for the exact same lockups. I brought it back after a week and got a Netgear RT314. I haven't turned the Netgear off since June and not one crash at all. It's an amazing piece of hardware and if you are into networking, you can get your feet wet with some telnet configuration (something the linksys doesn't have). i dunno that's just my two cents.

p.s.- Linksys tech support SUCKS sooooo bad. I was on the phone with them non stop with that router for about 4 days. Netgear has 24X7 support too.

I have the same router at my apartment and I get the exact same problem, the little bastard locks up for no reason at all... sucks

get netgear or SMC IMHO--they work better than linksys.

i've heard good things about SMC, is their a particular model? do they have 4 port routers?

i'm usng the smc 7004abr 4 port router right now and it's great. it also has a built in print server that works for my linux box as well as my w2k boxes. if you're in the market, i'd reccomend this router. also, read the reviews, i think that it does pretty well.

was looking at compusa site. they have 2 similar ones, dont know too much about networking, but one is more expensive, can you help me out?

the smc7004br is the older version. the newer one is the 7004abr. i'm not sure what the difference is, ir even that there is one. $99 seems a bit steep for this router. i've seen it in fry's for 69-79 and got it myself for ~39 after rebate by watching the hot deals forum. if you're not in a hurry, that may be the best way to go.

get SMC7004ABR--it's the newer model. Amazon.com, fry's and other fine online retailers have them for arround 70-80 bucks. I'm using the same model and been very satisfied so far. Just remember to flash to the latest firmware. ANd I like the printserver features especially.

Mine does that same thing every now and then. It's a minor annoyance. If I don't get the page right away, I quickly close the browser window then go cycle power on the unit. If you close the window quickly you can usually avoid the computer restart. Also if you are running XP you can "repair" the connection once the Linksys is reset and not have to reboot the computer. I seem to have this problem about twice a month.
