have you logged on as root? If not use username: root and password: whatever you put in during the install. Then type startx and see if you've got a better idea of whats up

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS NETWORKABLE, DO NOT PUT THIS MACHINE ON THE NET!!!!! I really dont want to deal with scans from a cracked newbie box because he wanted to give his friends access to his mp3s because they dont have jobs and cant buy cds.. But anyways. Look at: ldp
linuxsecurity.com<a target=new href="http://
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/security/">Mandrake security page</a><a target=new href="http://
http://www.securityfocus.com">security focus</a>

Learn a lot about hardening your system. Learn about properly setting up an ftp server (use scp if you can), NEVER log in as root, use su only when necessary, use sudo sparsely, use tripwire, use iptables, use tcp wrappers, DO NOT USE WU-FTPD!!!!

*pant pant* Sorry, tired of dealing with scans from hax0red b0x0rz

in all seriousness, keep it off the net till you get a handle on things.

I found www.linuxnewbie.org to be a nice place for some simple instruction on specific tasks.

As for your ftp server, I use ProFTPD. WU has a new exploit every few months, I'm not sure why people still use it. (don't really know enough to say).

One thing, get to a prompt and type 'netstat -a' and paste the contents in here. I guarontee there's about 4 times as many open ports as you need.

uhrm--- ^^^^^these guys hacked the gibson, they are elite...
what was the question---- oh i see now

alright (this is what i do on my debian server/firewal/etc)
i have a ftp (just to upload files from work and let others upload stuff)
i use samba to let me use winamp and stream my mp3s off my server (you can do this on a lan or over the internet if you have a really good connection)

or-- what i do to play my mp3s @work: i have apache running and just share my mp3s and password protect them

those are the best ways--- well there is also nfs but those are the easiest best ways

if you need some help setting up linux or securing your box (telling you what services are open etc. ) and i can say that because i am good. trust me

anyways PM me or aim me if you want

Heh, hacking gibsons is tough! Adding anthing to a firewall other than ssh is just stupid.

haha-- but--- you can have all services available that you want as long as you use iptables (i think ipchains does it) to allow and dissallow people to access your different ports via mac and ip

like i said-- you need some help- just ask

Oh, what does it really matter? I mean, there are SO MANY hacked Linux boxes sitting on big fat university network pipes right now that I have given up being paranoid. We just found two more this past week that some grad students had set up, oblivious to any security issues.

If he's just behind a modem or something, who cares? There are so many easy marks at universities right now that why would a hacker try to get into a Mandrake 8 box behind a modem pool?
