One time I was going to pick up some beer with some friends, everyone was 21, the driver just waited in the car. We all purchased our booze and walked out, then the cashier comes running after us and says "excuse me but we can't sell to you" And I'm sitting there blank faced thinking why not so I said "we're all 21 we all showed you our ID's and you've already sold it to us what's the problem?" So she said that we were buying for someone underage because someone was sitting in the car (the driver was 21 with ID, he just wasn't getting anything so he didn't want to go in) so we argue for a few minutes and she says that she is going to call the police for distribution to a minor, so my friend gets out and gives her his ID, and she wouldn't relent, so finally I lost it and just go off on this woman I mean really let her have it and her manager is outside trying to calm us down while I explain this idiocy to him, and he sides with her! Every single person with us was 21 with ID and they were saying that they were going to call the police! Finally I got fed up told them exactly where they could go and we drove off, just ridiculous.

Happens all the time in AK...it's supposed to curtail underage drinking/buying alcohol for minors.

Makes sense to me!

You're allowed to be in the store as a minor as long as you're accompanied by your parent/guardian.

In washington anything under the jurisdiction of the state liquor control board is absolutely off limits to anyone under 21.

In NJ I don't even think you're allowed to go IN to a liquor store if you're under 21. If you're like 10 years old and with a parent they won't say anything, but if you're a teenager and you're actually carrying the stuff I can see why they wouldn't want to sell it to your dad. It would look like he's buying it for you.

In Indiana you're not allowed in a liquor store if you're under 21 either. I went in to "help my friend pick stuff out" once and had to leave because I "didn't have ID on me."

at most of the stores around me i just walk in with my buddies and they never ask me for ID. Once in a blue moon at a random store they might, but for the most part - I just don't touch anything and mind my business and I won't get hassled.

Attendant: I still need to see it
Dad: He's under 21
Attendant: I can't sell you anyhting then. *Walk out*

Now is this really the way it is in CT? I've been going in and out of liquor stores all my life and never had a problem helping carry stuff. But according to state law, my father can still give me a beer as long as im 16 or over. Anyone know the legalities or had experiences in this sort of thing?
that's bs. your father is buying it. i would just take my business to another store and this time get a cart.

Seen it happen before, its the LAW, not bs

Selling alcohol or tobacco to a person that you think is going to distribute to minors is a generally bad idea when working retail. This can result in fines and job loss

That's why my friends stay in the car...

In PA, that's the law. In fact, you can't even sell if you have any reason to suspect that there are going to be under-21's in the car. It's also illegal for a minor to be in a vehicle transporting alcohol - even if it's in the trunk. They prosecuted a guy who brought his son along to return an empty keg not too long ago.

When I was a teenager it was easier to buy a dimebag than a six pack.

Are things still this way?

1) It's not a police state, and your breadth of experience has to be woefully small to really think it is.

2) No, the people who wanted it were the suburban soccer moms with too much time and WAY too much money on their hands. Not that many of them on ATOT.

3) Get a job you damn hippie

You should have got them to call the police.
If you were lucky they would have been warned for wasting police time.

Its not the law, as the last guy said. My father can LEGALLY give me alcohol in my own residence at the age of 16. Thus he should also be able to buy it with me around.

Yes, successfully.

I'll see if I can't wrangle the article - news resources around here are notoriously flakey and compartmentalized, though.

No, but they get enraged at things and write their congressman. Most moderates (who by definition tend not to feel as strongly about issues) don't.

Passing wildly unpopular laws isn't a good way to get reelected...passing laws that make control freaks feel warm and secure, and mildly annoy those who have thought through the consequences, isn't a problem.

"I'm going to pass a law banning people from killing fuzzy puppies!"
"Umm, that's a waste of time, a trivial law, and besides, sometimes you need to..."
"OMG YOU HATE FUZZY PUPPIES:|!"

The extent of this depends on the state.

Unless you know for sure, I wouldn't wait in the car if you're a minor having a friend buy you alcohol in case a cashier sees you out in the lot.

Then again when I was underage, I'd have my bro and friends buy for me all the time. Of course I'd give them a ride to get it and wait in the car... never had a problem once. I'm 21 now anyway but at least I can say I never got myself or any of my buyers in trouble for the 4 years or so I drank. The only thing I've ever heard of is this one grocery store would check IDs of all people if one of them was buying alcohol or even tobacco. I dont think a "I dont know this person" would work, but I seem to maybe remember hearing that it did work for someone. Then this other grocery store suppposedly didnt care. A few months I'd have a buddy buy for me and like I'd tell him what I want and he'd always go "just come in" and I'd alway say no from what I heard of that other store. He'd always say "no its fine, they will sell it anyway, you can pick it out" but I never went in with him. I ask other people about that and a friend whos worked there for a few years, he says its fine and they dont care.

The OPs story is sort of understandable. It seems to make no sense given the age 16 w/ parents law, but you cant realy blame the cashier since they dont wanna lose their job (I'm sure when they're hired they given very strict rules).

OTOH, DaiShan's story is downright ridiculous.

We were in Austin, and they wouldn't take anything but a valid Texas ID. I am from Wisconsin, I had 4 forms of ID (1 government issue 2 CC and my work ID) plus my US passport and they wouldn't sell to me, something about the local college kids forging out of state IDs. It seemed kind of asinine to me as all 3 of us had our WI ID's plus a US passport but it was their prerogative I guess.
