Dear dmcowen674:

These laws went into effect during the Clinton administration.

So, you're blaming state laws on the President now?

Didn't you get the memo, blaming things on the president makes you look smart, political, unique, and more attractive to members of the opposite (or same) sex. It also gives you +2" on your e-penis, but only if it's done on an internet forum.

He probably said that because Dave has a habit of blaming anything bad that has ever happened on GWB.

In WA, you can't go into a liquor store if you're under 21 (not sure if it's the state law or just common practice - there's a sign in every liquor store window though.) And the store can get in trouble if they DON'T card both people, even if only one is paying. I've been asked for my id when my husband buys, and I just show it.

Yep, doesn't supprise me.

My parents went out of town a while ago and told me to throw a party while they were gone, just don't let anyone drive home drunk. So I got a buddy of mine to take me to Wally World, and I filled a cart with booze, gave him money and walked outside. You see, I planned for such a possible inconvinence, and as such I still have Vodka, Jack Daniels and Captain Morgan left over

Attendant: I need to see your ID
Dad: He's not buying anything
Attendant: I still need to see it
Dad: He's under 21
Attendant: I can't sell you anyhting then. *Walk out*

Now is this really the way it is in CT? I've been going in and out of liquor stores all my life and never had a problem helping carry stuff. But according to state law, my father can still give me a beer as long as im 16 or over. Anyone know the legalities or had experiences in this sort of thing?
that's bs. your father is buying it. i would just take my business to another store and this time get a cart.

Seen it happen before, its the LAW, not bs
In CT you can legally go into a liquor store with your parent/guardian.

I am from Wisconsin, I had 4 forms of ID (1 government issue 2 CC and my work ID) plus my US passport and they wouldn't sell to me, something about the local college kids forging out of state IDs. It seemed kind of asinine to me as all 3 of us had our WI ID's plus a US passport but it was their prerogative I guess.

It's a TABC law, but military ID was ok when I last got my TABC license in 1996, could have changed by then.

That's how it works in VT. The law isn't just about selling to people under 21, it's about supplying people under 21. If you're with someone who's buying alcohol, and helping them carry it, it's assumed that you'll be consuming it as well, especially if that's all that's being purchased or if there's a large amount being purchased all at once. I've had it happen to me before, when I was under 21 and had someone else purchasing alcohol (I was driving since she didn't have a car). But I was slick enough to let her go through checkout alone, and not be anywhere nearby until we were outside again.

It does sound crazy, but I bet in most of these situations where people have had issues buying alcohol it is because that business may have been busted for a screw up in the past and they would rather risk losing a customer instead of potentially getting fined.

You have to go to a Liquor store to buy beer? What kind of backwards ass state is Conn? Here we can buy it in a grocery story, a convenience store, and even gas stations. The Liquor stores sell........... you guess it.......Liquor, hard spirits, the good stuff.

You can't come inside liquor stores down here if you are under 21 <big signs at the entrances>.Vice cops have been cracking down for underage purchasings.

Edit: Personally, I don't see why 18 years old folks can vote and die for this country but can't buy/drink alcohol or get in casinos until 21.

The idea behind raising the drinking age to 21 was a poor attempt at curbing under 18 drinking. 18 means that the person could be a hs senior and just supplies the alcohol to the younger kids. Though, 21 doesn't matter too much, here in NYS just go to a place that doesn't care for ID and you can buy as much stuff as you want.

I am 23. I tried to buy some matches for my grill the other day (long kind), and the store refused to sell. I didn't have my ID. I had just hopped in the car with 5 bucks and drove 1/2 mile to a local store.

The bizzare thing... I buy beer there all the time and rarely get carded. In fact, I rarely get cared period. My GF gets carded 90% of the time and I get it about 5% of the time. Stupid laws.

more seriously, there are other nations with legal age over 18. most do not seem to enforce the legal age.

uhhh, you must be fairly young. Most of the US *was* 18; we changed it to 21. The other countries haven't changed theirs from 21 to 18; they never had a 21 age requirement.

Its not the law, as the last guy said. My father can LEGALLY give me alcohol in my own residence at the age of 16. Thus he should also be able to buy it with me around.
How is a liquor store "in your own residence"?

And, re: the "I'm over 21, but my license says under 21" - It's incredibly difficult to forge an entire state license, but it's relatively simple to just change one number on it. i.e. If your birthday was 12/1/85, you could simply cover the first 1 to make it 2/1/85. It would be hard to spot, hence the kiddie version of a driver's license to prevent such attempts at forgery. It used to be a fairly common practice to alter the birthdate on a license; the "Under 21" versions of licenses were made specifically to stop the practice.

I'm not sure about it being illegal to sell alcohol to someone if a member of their party is under 21... That really doesn't make sense. Imagine a mother at a grocery store with a 6-pack of beer among the other $150 worth of groceries, and her 3 year old child is present. BUT, most places at least have it in their store's policy to deny the sale of alcohol to people when a member of their party is under 21 and there's reasonable suspicion to believe the under 21 person is going to be consuming the alcohol. With the number of sting operations where they fine dozens of stores, most stores really don't care that they've annoyed some group of teeny boppers and their slightly older friends. $1 of lost profits is a heckuva lot cheaper than hundreds or thousands of dollars in fines.

You can buy beer in grocery/convenience/liquor stores in CT. I'm not sure where you came up with that assumption.

In PA, that's the law. In fact, you can't even sell if you have any reason to suspect that there are going to be under-21's in the car. It's also illegal for a minor to be in a vehicle transporting alcohol - even if it's in the trunk. They prosecuted a guy who brought his son along to return an empty keg not too long ago.

Yeah they are very very strict at the state stores, im 24 and my gf is 25 and we both get carded every time we go in together, even though im always carrying it an paying.
