Lite-On 48161h combo defective?

I have a Lite-On 48161h combo DVD/CD drive and for the last year it worked fine but now it only wants to play CDs. I have tried DVDs that I?ve burned myself, actual DVD movies and a data DVD, all with the same result ? the drive just spins with the light flashing at the same regular rate, then it stops with the result that it reckons the drive is empty. I have several other DVD drives one in the same computer and all read the same discs fine. Oh, and I have the same drive in another system which still works fine. I think the drive is defective and out of warranty but am willing to try suggestions.

Sounds dead, although you might want to either open it up and clean it out, or blow some compressed air into it through the open tray to see if that helps.

My LTC-4816's behave like this whenever I use nVidia's IDE drivers. Even with the Windows default, these combo drives can be touchy at times. I have two of these and to be honest, if I had to do it again, I would not have bought them.

Mine has been doing the same thing. What IDE drivers do you recommend it not the nVidia ones? Its really pissing me off and I'm thinking about getting a new drive.

I fixed mine by flashing to the newest bios as of a few months ago. However for some reason the disc is often out of position in the tray when I open it causing it to get stuck sometimes. This was a problem that started with the drive failure. Now the drive works but that problem remains.

By flashing the firmware on the drive or on your mobo? I flashed the firmware on the drive yesterday and still no luck. Its really frusterating, it works very well with non CD-Rs.
