Just go with whatever drive is cheaper. Its most likely the Lite-On. Both are good CD-RW drives.

the key questions is what are your needs...audio, data pc software backup
I had a plex 2410 and a liteon 24102B..the plex feels more solid but is very picky on what media it will burn at max speed and this goes for the 40 x plex as well from reports I have seen

The liteon is much less expensive and is an excellent choice(at least 24102B)..given how quickly the price of cdrw has dropped I think the less you spend the better...the Liteon will backup all most all pc game protections the plex will not..the liteon can not read Cactus data shield an audio protection but the plex will...if you have another cdrom that reads the protection then it is of no importance...

it's up to you. it's more of a brand name decision. i have the 24x plextor and it works wonders. my friend has the 24x liteon. they're about the same if you ask me.

Thanks for the advice. I had no idea that Lite-On was as good a brand as Plextor. I'll order up the Lite-On in a day or two.

Thanks again

i bet the performance/feature are probably the same, but is the build quality/service the same too? i doubt it. Lite-on came onto the scene not that long ago, it was praised because it could do safedisc2 which not many cheap burners could do at the time

I just got both the 40x12x48 LiteON and 16x DVD Liteon drives and am very impressed. Both are quiet/fast units. Quality is fine. Strange thing is they came with cheap looking stickers saying Liteon instead of the name painted on the drive like the retail box shows. Not a big deal. I have a Plextor also and do not regret going with the Liteon. Much better then the Sony and Aopen units I have tried in the past.

I'm getting a cheap Lite-On 32x CD-RW tomorrow

I hope it can burn CD's fast enough and well enough to replace my aging HP CD-Writer 8100 (yeah, its old but it only begun to toast CD's in the last 3 months)

I was looking around for tests, reviews, hands-on experiences, and from what I've read these babies rock...

The three systems Ive built in the past two months have used LiteOn drives exclusively and Ive had no problems with em at all. I have an old LiteOn CDROM thats an OEM but I tracked it down and its still running perfectly after like 2yrs They're quality might not be the same as Plextors, but if it only costs $90 compared to $180...you can afford to buy two and if the first one dies...oh well...ya got hte backup

There is a comparative review of the 40X Plextor and Lite-On drives at www.gotapex.com.

The guy liked both, the Plextor felt more solid quality-wise, but was picky about the media it would write to at fast speeds. He gave the Lite-On the higher marks because of the media and price difference.

Me, I just got the 40X Plextor from Dell about a week ago when they were having the 25% off coupons. Its on backorder, but I'm willing to wait a couple of weeks for the quality.

Geez the Lite-On is quiet...

Been testing some CD-burns on it just for kicks and I can hear my Samsung CD-Rom 5x louder than the Lite-On...

Even the CD door opening is quiet...

LiteOn rocks man! some websites said that it's "noisy", but my question is "WHAT NOISE??"
I's quiet, fast, reliable and perform well. It can even copy some protected CDs. I prefer this than Yamaha or Plextor (well... they're just to expensive for me) hehehe....., keep your bucks for something else

I did just that,

with the Lite-On I bought 3 Thermaltake 80x80 SMART FAN w/ Variable Fan Speed Control and 2 45cm round IDE cables...

and comparing with the price on the Plextor 32x I could have also bought a new CPU cooler with money to spare...

What about a Sony 24X OEM - it has burn proof and is also pretty cheap? LiteON vs SONY VS Ricoh? Does it really matter which?

In the CD-RW 24x test over @ THG the Sony didn't came out that well when compared with the other CD-RW on test.

Here's the link:

Eleven 20x/24x CD Burners

Check this out before you decide which on to buy...

BTW, I'm really happy with my Lite-On

I'd go with the plextor, i'm a fan of plextor. Search Lite-on in general hardware, look how many people are having problems. Not saying everyone is having problems tho.

I had a Plextor 20x and loved it except the software (Roxio-Adaptec) which came with it caused all kinds of grief with my Win2k system. Got a 40x Liteon and love everything about it. FAST! quiet, and comes with Nero which is far superior to the Adaptec software.

My Liteon LTR 24102B has a sticker on the front saying www.liteonit.com, and AFAIK that's it AFA ID is concerned. They probably did that so they could sell the drives to companies to rebadge. I'm pretty happy with the drive. I'm getting it to do everything I'd hoped for and it isn't fussy about the media I put in it.

Got the Liteon 24x and the more I use Nero the more impressed I am. Amazing software. I had a Creative 8x4x32 CDRW drive and the darn thing was so distressingly noisy I RMA'd it. They send me back a _new_ drive (Creative) and some documentation claiming to have found a defect in the drive I RMA'd. The replacement was just as noisey, far as I could tell. I hate that drive. Got the Liteon because I just couldn't get CD-Text to work in Nero with the Creative drive. Am glad I got the Liteon.

I just ordered a 32x Lite-On from Mwave.com. I Was gonna go for the plextor 24x, but It was 30 dollars more than the Liteon. It will be replacing my Teac 8x SCSI CD-R (it doesnt do rewriting). I was thinking about the 40x CDRW but I read that it doesnt even burn much faster than a 24x (something like 15 secs faster) so I opted for the 32x Unit.
