Liteon Drive wont read any media.

My good ole 12x10x?? liteon cd burner has stopped reading all media. It recognizes a cd is in it but wont read any files on it.

Any ideas? How can I clean the optics in it if that is even an option?
It shows up during startup and xp sees it as a cd drive.

Lite-On LTR 12101B SCSI CDrom Device is what windows xp recognizes it as. I dont have SCSI though. Its run through IDE. ATA 100

Has it ever worked in XP???

If so I suffered from sorta same thing....My !6x DVD-rom would spin up and have a 50% chance of reading the media and then a 50% chance it will act as if it is reading then get itself stuck and require me to restart to get it from continuously spinning the thing up and down....

I bought an optical lazer cleaner which is a fancy cdom disc with a bruch on it and when I would run that it would work for a few days then go back.....

My opinion was that the laser needed adjustment and the cost benefit factor was not worth it....Plus the fact it was now out of warranty by 1 year.....

I am still out on whether Liteon which is cheaper is cheaper for an apparent reason....It did last 2 years and 1 year past its warranty and I used the heck out of it....However other then a Maxtor Harddrive and a Radeon Le vid card I haven't had anything ever die on me....

No, I am not sure it has ever worked in XP (this install at least) The drive is pretty old. I think I will just go with a new DVD burner and be done with it.

Has it ever had its firmware flashed??? May try a newer firmware at some of the more popular sites....www.storagereviewer.com or maybe even www.cdrinfo.com if they are still around...


Maybe just verify it works in another OS and sell it...Plenty of ppl still run Win98 or ME that could use a cheap burner....
