Lock Ups... :(

Don't you hate being the "computer guy" in the group that everyone looks to to fix thier computer. We'll My friend got a hardware upgrade about a week ago (512MB Crucial Ram, Athlon 1.2, Abit KT7A). We'll the problem is the computer seems to lock up quite often. So i took all the cards out and pretty much narrowed it down to his Netgear FA311 Nic as it only locked up when doing internet related stuff (i.e. going to webpages and in irc). Soooo i switched out the NIC with a Realtek, intsalled the drivers and no connection....i tried specifieing the IP and SN Mask and right when i click on IE and tried to go to a page it locked. I checked IRQ's and windows reports no conflicts. He is running Windows 2000 btw. Does anyone have any advice?? Even his mom is pressuring me to get it fixed...grrr. Its like I'm at work or something.

is it ok in the device manager?? try getting new drivers?? i heard about a netgear nic that isnt recognized right in windows, check netgears page.

also, a nice test is hook it up to anther computer via ipx (lan) and see if that works.

also, you said you put in anothe nic, is he on cable?? it takes anywhere from 2 to a good 5-10 minutes for the new nic to be okayed....

I know here in MN AT&T Broadband wants your MAC address off the new NIC to OK your Cable Modem for service, and when you change it you need to call them to reactivate your modem with that MAC - that might be involved.

Is he using a sound blaster live card??

Wow, lots of responses, thats good . Yes he was using a sound blaster live card but we took it out becuase i think it has issues with that big in via's South Bridge. Also, i'll call to make sure, but i think our cable provider uses the MAC address of the cable modem and not the NIC. But ever if they used the NIC MAC it didn't work with the original one. And yea i tried diff. PCI slots. Thanks for the help guys.

Was there a windows network logon password entered ever?

Hmm, well now that you mention it...it usually just wizzes by it as start up. I thought maybe he had set it to use the same password automatically evertime or something.
