***ok, before everyone starts flaming, lets give u some background first

1)To my knowledge, have paid for all dell laptops/desktop gotten and billed for.

2)Have never gotten any such letter from dell saying i'm missing payment.
3) get this letter in the mail yesterday with "dell financial services" never heard of
demanding that i pay $770 bucks (never bought anything for that amount) to a p.o. box in ohio with a funny payto name
(and never gotten anything from dell)
4) Morning called the real D & B place, forwarded me to a person, told them about this p.o. box in ohio thing and even that person was skeptical
5) remembered warnings about paypal scam, thought if posted about a dell scam going on, may help anandtechers

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DELL FINANCIAL SERVICES!!!!

I just got a mail (actually in my dad's name) with following:

Dad's name
Address
QUEENS (important since it wasn't my city, very broad) NY 11xxx

Company name
Dunscomm LLC something

The following is an invoice for Dell Financial Services for payment of $707.00 Bucks

Then payto was

Duncan something
P.O.BOX = BIG WARNING SIGN, Why would dell send to a P.O.BOX!!!?

After calling the #, recording who answered, asked person who she was working for, Duncan Financial

Ah what the heck, let me first post this, and then i'll continue my story

:disgust:

This letter was gotten IN MAIL As in SNAIL MAIL, and I'm sure lots of people, including Anandtechers may have gotten it, and said

WHAT THE!!! WHERE DID THIS HUGE BILL COME FROM!!! $770.29.

HERE ARE THE CLUES:

Queens, NY = In dell's database it would have the specific city, because QUEENS is 1 borough of NYC, but everything I filled with dell had specifc city example: Flushing

In other words, these scammers got this from some sort of database (but not a good one)

P.O. BOX (Dell doesn't send payments to p.o.box)

# called up: when recording and asking woman who responded who she worked for she said: Dun and Brandstreet

And then started laughing. She asked for Account #, so she could pull personal info.

IN OTHER WORDS THIS SCAM is meant for GULLIBLE people who would
a) give personal info while disputing so they could be lured in
b) Get $$$ because some may not realize only dell would sell big ticket items, like computers that are several hundreds of dollars.

Once they got credit card info, etc... even if disputing it, it would be mined for more scams!

Hmm...interest.

Sounds like either a scam or a collection agency. If you are late on a payment, many companies authorize 3rd party collection agencies to collect the overdue money. Make sure in your situation, you are not late on any payments. If you paid every payment in a timely manner, then apparently it's a scam. Good luck.

could be from an identity theft , if they are a collection agency trying to recover from a leased dell computer and you didn't buy it then perhaps someone used your name and now your getting the bill, you should make sure it doesn't go into your credit file.. good luck...

What did she say when you gave her the account# they had sent you????

Dun & Bradstreet is the collection agency for Dell Financial Services.

Do you or your Dad own a Dell computer or laptop? Better call to straighten it out because if the past due amount is incorrect it could negatively affect you or your Dad's credit. D&B is a legit company...I would at least check it out thoroughly before dismissing it as a scam.

Also, many companies use PO Boxes to receive lock box payments.

<< P.O.BOX = BIG WARNING SIGN, Why would dell send to a P.O.BOX!!!? >>

Have you ever looked at the address where you send your credit card payments? 90% of the credit card companies use PO Box's for payments. It's a normal practice and is not a big warning sign.

Be sure to let us know when you decide on a name :Q

It might be helpful to calm down, get a spell checker and put together 1 coherent post with all the info.

The address looks legit: DFS = Dell Financial Services linked

Where do I send monthly payments when I pay by check?

If you do not use our AutoPay Plan <../Static/pres_AutoPayPersonal.asp>, then make your check payable to DFS Acceptance and send it to DFS Acceptance, PO Box 4125, Carol Stream, IL 60197-4125. Please allow two to three days to process your payment.

Ok, Dell only ships Fedex, UPS or Airborne. All three of those companies do not deliver to a P.O. Box so y should Dell ask for payment through a P.O. Box. If a company is seeking payment then they will have to send a bunch of notices first which will have to come from the company itself.

guinea, sorry to burst your bubble but i don't think this is a scam. last year i took out a loan from dell to get a laptop so i've dealt with dell financial service. i just checked one of my bills and in fact the address you provided IS dell's. and it INDEED is to a po box.

my advice is you better deal with this. don't shrug it off thinking it's a scam. you'll get into trouble later.

Dell Financial Services is a joint venture by Dell and CIT. It is a seperate company from Dell. I know, I just bought a laptop off Ebay from them. Has your Dad purchased from them? Doesn't make sense they would send something out of the blue.

This is most likely just a collection agency being to lazy to try and find the correct person to collect from. I had a friend who had a collection agency asking him for money he didn't owe. Turns out that they were not investigating like they should be and simply going to the first name they found (that matched the name on the account they had) in that city and sending them a collection notice. If it is a mistake, let them know, and tell them if they continue to harass you, a lawyer will be filing suit against them shortly.

This topic does not belong here, but since it is still here I will post some follow up. Unfortunately, I have had bad dealings with both of these companies (DFS and D&B).

DFS claimed I did not make a payment one month, when in fact I made the payment, and sent them a copy of the cleared check. I would get a call from D&B every evening, and I explained the situation to many people. Usually I would just hang up on them. I filled a complain with the Texas Better Business Bureau, and they sent it on to DFS. I got an apology letter from DFS, so I thought everything was good.

A week later D&B calls harassing me again. Now I am upset, yelling at the people at D&B. Call DFS and yell at them. I threatened to sue for harassment. When a company calls you everyday asking for money that you don't owe, it makes me mad. I haven't heard much from them since sending a Fed-Ex to both companies stating my intentions to sue if this continues.

But both these companies are horribly managed. I wish I had the cash to pay out my laptop loan and get this bitches off my back.
