well ah heck me senseless with a pitchfork......i have in my hands a Logitech G5!!!!!!
wooohoooo....and damn is that weights cartridge thing fun..heh...
havnt hooked it up yet, only just arrived, got family coming over so gotta deal with that first sadly...*grins*....but will play later and post results on how good it is....

anyways, if you check the logitech website, you can see that its still got the notify me sign, so i guess 3rd party UK retailers know more than the company that makes it about its availability ;-)

ohhhhh yeah...UK Rulez ;-)

OR, which is what I would guess: they are selling them before they are supposed to release them. Either way, good for you.

well, i can quite heartily say, your money will be well spent getting this mouse if u game, or have any need for on the fly sensitivity changing....

its gorgeous......not too different from MX510/518, same shape and size, but a fair bit lighter without the weight cage......add the weight cage and u can make it heavier in quite nicely spaced increments....

pros.

Good for medium to large hands.
Nice software with good options.
Independant X/Y axis sensitivity.
5 sensitivity modes u can set, or 4, or 3, or 2.....with 50dpi increments.
Nicely clicking buttons.
VERY good tracking on pretty much any surface u would use for a mouse.
Corded cord is nice, certainly makes a change from rubber...lol
Weight cartridge really does make a difference depending on how much weight and also where in teh cartridge u put the weights.....so anyone should be able to get the mouse the right weight and balance for themselves.

cons.

Smallpaws will find it a handful like the MX510/518 as its exactly the same chassis on top pretty much.
So many options you can adjust you might just get frustrated wondering if you are using the best one or should you fiddle around some more...heh
Less buttons, realistically u only have LMB, RMB and side button, wheel does tilt but its never an easy prospect to use that effectively in the middle of a furious battle for something...lol.....people who like to bind mouse buttons to switch weapons might wanna stick with MX510 or 518.....those like me who use Q will be happy with G5.

Overall, this is a fantastic rodent, i'm well chuffed i bought it and possibly a little of the placebo effect, but also the mouses abilities (the independant x/y sensitivity mostly) enabled me to go pwn it up on a few servers better than usual....heh

have found 15.8g to be my weight in the cartridge, and my sensitivity (X = LtoR, Y = UtoD) is at 2000/1800, 1600/1400, 1200/1000, 1000/800, 400/400.......

i hope others find joy in it...if u dont please say why, would be interesting to know...thats assuming its ever released outside of 3rd party UK retailers...heh ;-)

If there's going to be one thing that keeps me from buying this, it's the non existent 2nd thumb button. Actually, maybe it's looks too.

to be honest, what the mouse can do is worth losing the thumb button, u can still use the tilt on the scroll wheel for extra buttons......

azndude, apart from colour this mouse is exactly the same size and shape as the MX510/518 series mice.....i know cuz i got a 510...lol......so unless the colour is putting you off dont think the picture u see on the website means its different, its just the angle they took the pic at.....

try searching around for it online, u might find someone who is selling it already....lol
dunno when its official release is tho....

biggest difference i've noticed tho is that laser does make a difference, it can read on almost anything, sometimes with the other mice u get little glitches were it reads wrongly and swings you around all over the place..lol

the only good feature i find in the g5 is the weight catridge but seriously neither the logitech mx 518 or mx510 or even mx500 is heavy. They are all light weight , well atleast to me.

and that non existenent thumb button... argh! i wish logitech didnt take it out!. anyway i will probably skip this G series and wait for logitech;s next gen mouse . Currently i am happy with my logitech MX518 mouse!

being able to set your x axis sensitivity different from the Y axis is actually very useful too, the 518 doesnt do that........but otherwise there wouldnt be too much point swapping if u have a 518.....but neone looking to get a new mouse i would say G5....

Thanks for your review knyghtbyte. I find that most mouse surfaces get kinda sticky or gunked up if you're at all sweaty during gameplay. The "matte finish" of the G5 looks promising in combating that problem. Have you had any experience with what I've described?

No offense, but you need to work on your grammar. I own the MX518 and think it's a great looking mouse. I know the G5 and G7 have pretty much the exact same shape of the MX5* series. The colors are indeed what's making me think they're ugly. I hate the orange spot on the G5 and I don't like the teal color of the G7.

lol.....i cant be arsed to use perfect grammar all the time on this site, i often post from work and dont have time to go all flowery with my language, but just so you know i happen to be a qualified proof reader in my job and if i want to i can implement my skills perfectly...oh, and this is a tech part of the site, not the P&N area where grammar is more important as you can be misinterpreted by it.

back to the mice.....Ogewo, this mouse is soooo much better for staying clean as far as i've noticed....i've certainly run it in by now, playing around 6 hours a day average since i got it...lol.....doesnt gunk up hardly at all on the buttons compared to the 510, and the feet underneath so far seem much more resistent to losing traction from sweatpaw syndrome....

es3rnotfound, setting the sensitivity different on the x and y axis is actually useful for some maps on CS:S, other games i dont know as i havnt tried yet......basically it means you can have a setting where your side to side movement is quick allowing easy scanning of the area you are entering (for instance up the main exit stairs near vending on office) but your up down is slower so it doesnt bob up and down too much as you go up, i've found it very useful.....i would imagine other games would find it useful too, just havnt got any to try atm...lol

Ruffryder, i would say its worth considering an upgrade from 510 to G5 if u game a lot and to a high level (in something like CS:S), especially if the money factor isnt too much of a problem........upgrading from a 518 to the G5 isnt quite such an easy decision....if money is tight then dont worry, if money isnt a factor i'd say its worth it, that laser is soooo much more accurate at reading a surface than the infrared.....

to be honest on the colour i dont mind too much as the thing is covered by my paw most of the time i am near it....lol.....the G5 isnt too bad anyhow...

I just got the G5 today, i'm very happy with it, very sensitive and accurate. Move's very smoothly with the teflon pads. It's comfortable to hold (for my hand at least). On the fly sensitivity is very handy. As for downsides, the middle click (scroll wheel) is quite stiff, so i swapped it to the the thumb button instead. Don't know what else i can say about it.

I'm most interested in the G7 (I don't think I can go back to a corded mouse after being so happy with my MX700 for two years), but the thing that really turns me off is that they removed one of the side buttons. I use both all the time now (back/forward on webpages, extra buttons for games, etc.)

I'll probably keep my MX700 until it bites the dust in any case, it performs great and I have other things that could stand to be upgraded ahead of the mouse. I'll definitely look at the G7 whenever I have to replace my mouse though.

Edit: Completely forgot about the on-the-fly adjustable sensitivity...that would be great for games, but as I said...I don't think it's enough to spend $80 on and dump my perfectly fine MX700....yet

the G5 is the gamers choice, the G7 is the got-money-to-throw-about non-gamers choice cuz its cordless....heh

seriously tho, if you dont game other than pootling about from time to time then go for a cheaper mouse or a cordless...but if u game hardcore stylee and you want every edge possible then go for the G5

as for the dude who asked where people getting them, dunno where in the USA, but www.overclockers.co.uk have been selling them since end of last month...heh

actually, that was a niggle i'd forgotten to include i think, the scroll wheel can be a tiny bit stiff......but no doubt it will loosen up after much deagle/nade swapping...lol

have u tried the independent sensitivity tho? that rules at times
