I've used a couple distributions of linux and had no stability issues. Linux is one of the most stable operating systems but its not user friendly.

Yeah, dude, it will just stop dead in its tracks. That's why they make server software for Macs, because it doesn't work. Logic logic logic??? Mac wasn't at the forefront of the networking revolution, but it can easily run server software just fine like any PC Compatible. Obviously NEITHER platforms will defeat any UNIX system because UNIX was specifically designed for serving purposes.

I agree that Mac's arent crap, in fact I think they're very good comps, though a bit expensive.
But saying that MacOS is more stable than Linux is just BS, and everyone knows it.
Linux is way more stable than both windoze and MacOS, of course that depends on what version you're using.
If you're using some hacked up version running a beta kernel etc of course it might have some issues, but try running a real up to date distro and it wont crash until you make it crash by doing something stupid(and even when doing stupid things its not that easy to crash it).

One of the computer labs a school has Viewsonic Monitors. They look great except for one thing. They are hooked up to MACs. MAC are a pain in the a$$ in networks. Someone mentioned Linux not very user friendly, but nether is the MAC OS. Put a newbie on any OS and Windows comes out as the most user friendly. Up Bill Gates's *******, but it is true. Windows can be a pain to, but most people learn it easier. Also lets face it, some people are to stupid to us a computer (any computer). I was not impress with the G3s that the school received. They had no floppy (not like the floppy is the most used/ cheapest portable media) and the CD-ROM reminded me of CD-ROM in a sub $600 PC. I will NOT try for force a MAC nor a PC down anyone's throat or any other platform/OS for that matter. I would not wont anyone to do the same to me. END OF DISCUSSION!

Back on topic!
Crappy Old Malaysian Parts Are Questionable/Quare/Quitters/Quacks! ~~~ That about says it all. Gateway may be better, but they are not at the top of my list. Dell is my preference for most people that ask, or a custom built system is for most gamers (a great number of companies fill this bill). Building it yourself is the best if you have the knowledge, money, and time.

Don't criticize the Mac and then expect an END OF DISCUSSION. Your opinion is not the end-all.

But yes, Compaq sucks, Gateway doesn't. If they were cars, Compaq would be a Pinto that was about to explode. They have horrible designs on their desktops, HELLISH customer service (which I had to scream at last week just to get some decent results), and just an overall BAD reputation. Die Compaq die.

I think it is so gay that PC companies are manufacturing cases that resemble the gay Mac cases. Rainbow colors and all of theat. A good case mod is better any day. Another reason PCs are better. Build your own system!! SO many diff manufacturers of MOBOs. Everything is able to be customized (except on cheap, yet overpriced crap like Compaq). I wish Copaq would just die!! Just like HP computers!! HP should stick to networking devices now, they have done alright with those. Linux is so much more stable than MacOS. In my experience, Win2K is more stable!! I have yet to crash my system that has been running for a month...

On another note,

Whenever I am forced to open a Compaq up for some reason, I feel nausiated! Usually the guts of a computer are nice, but on Compaqs, it makes one sick! Funky screws, nothing is very accessible. The drive controllers are the weirdest thing. One ribbon runs all sorts of crap. It really does make me sick though! Compuke is terrible.

A word of warning to anyone considering a Compaq purchase......Look at their website. It's ass-backwards in every way. The search engine is virtually useless the way the information is catalogued (product descriptions in English may only be hosted on the China site which the search engine DOESN'T include if you're at the USA site, and there are multiple sites for Compaq's various country locations). Based on the website, you'd think their customer service can't be all that great either, AND YOU'RE RIGHT!!! All out of warranty merchandise must be serviced through a completely separate company called PC Service Net (even CRAPPIER website) which doesn't stock anything you need ever. If you complain to Compaq they give you the run-around until you shutup. DON'T BUY COMPAQ...EVER.

Bump for ya, NFS4.

I have a friend that is living out of town now that bought a Compaq. I hope he does not need help or plan to upgrade! I wish he were here so I could slap him. :| Friend don't let friends buy Compaq (or HP).

the newer compaqs are pretty good. They are all atx and pretty standard and all. They cant afford to be all proprietary anymore, it costs too much to source parts. The old ones on the other hand sucked. I used to have a p100 presario 7222. It had proprietary coast cache module so i couldn't just buy one for $5 it was $50 from compaq (no i didnt buy one). And when i finally gutted the thing to move to an AT tower, the floppy wouldn't work connected to a normal mobo. And the cdrom had plastic nubs on the bezel so it wouldn't fit in a regular case (filed them off, worked fine though). The modem had a cable running to the motherboard so that the modem didnt need its own UART chip. That machine was total crap. Oh yeah.. and macs suck. In high school i had to program on them and i swear they locked up more than win 3.1.

hans007, you said, "... the newer compaqs are pretty good. They are all atx and pretty standard and all. They cant afford to be all proprietary anymore, it costs too much to source parts. ...," but couldn't be that they make more money by using proprietary parts. If their sales have take a nose dive, maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Hans007, your high school Macintosh was problem older than Jesus. If not, well then, all I can say is you were probably using a sh1tty compiler, or you just suck at programming. I used Symantec C++ and Codewarrior for 5 years with almost no troubles (only with Symantec C++ in 1996 when Symantec totally dropped support for it, NEVER had a single problem with Codewarrior). If I put a 286 on your desk, do you think programming on it would be as stable as on a 486 or above?
BTW, in the first HS programming class I took, we used Mac classic's with free versions of a Pascal interpreter. Stable as hell. You couldn't do anything because it was Pascal but it was stable as hell.

Compaq's DeskPro's are very good comps.
Sure not tweak-monsters or anything, but for those who wants a stable comp that does what its supposed(which would mostly mean corps), they're very good.
Not to mention their server line, Compaq makes THE best x86 servers IMO.

I PERSONALLY want everyone working at Compaq to get a nasty strain of herpes after the appauling treatment I received from them, over me being able to purchase a measly power supply which they had 787 of in stock, and couldn't sell to me because they "have to keep a reserve for warrantied customers." That's just bad business. Compaq could make more of those things because they were proprietary and I couldn't find a single one of them anywhere. Any company who treats customers like that right after the warranty expires should be looking at themselves daily wondering "Geez...maybe it's not just a rash?"
