FW students protest TAKS decision

12:54 PM CDT on Thursday, May 24, 2007

By DARLA MILES / WFAA-TV

FORT WORTH ? Students who had been planning to walk across the stage at graduation ceremonies this weekend were instead walking a picket line Thursday morning.

The Trimble Tech High School seniors marched in front of Fort Worth Independent School District headquarters to protest Wednesday's decision by trustees to bar students who failed the TAKS test from commencement exercises.

About a dozen young people, carrying signs and chanting, began picketing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. They represent the 613 Fort Worth seniors who did not pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam.

Crystal Martinez complained that while she finished at the top of her class with a 3.5 grade point average, she is now blocked from graduation by failing the TAKS test.

"We know we're not going to get our diplomas, but we just want to walk across the stage," Martinez said. "That's all we ask for right now."

Classmate Chloe Walker agreed. "I believe that I have at least the right to walk the stage with all my friends," she said. "I made it this far, and I have all my credits I need. I deserve to get my certificate of completion."

School officials said non-graduating seniors will have a chance to take the TAKS test again in July. If they pass, they can participate in a separate commencement exercise in August.

The Trimble students said they planned to continue their protest through the day, and may be joined by other students.

Not all school districts ban students who fail the TAKS from graduation ceremonies. Arlington, Coppell, Duncanville, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Hurst-Euless-Bedford and Richardson students are permitted to "walk the stage."

But school districts in Allen, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Dallas, DeSoto, Garland, Irving, Lancaster, Mansfield, McKinney, Mesquite, Plano and Wylie all have policies similar to the Fort Worth ISD.

So they're NOT getting their diplomas for failing this TAK test, yet the one girl who failed had a 3.5 GPA......that's rather harsh, no?

GPAs don't mean a damn thing. There are too many variables that go into them.

I don't remember if it was a TAK test but I took some kind of test when I graduated from high school in Corpus Christi, TX. You have to either be really dumb, lazy, or inattentive not to pass those things.

Sounds like their standards weren't too high at that school.

I think they should be allowed to walk. My college allowed you to walk if you would be able to complete the requirements for graduation by the end of the summer. I believe that is a pretty typical policy. You don't get a diploma until you finish, but you get to participate in the ceremony. The school should be happy that these kids consider graduation to be an important event!

Exactly. She finished at the TOP of her class and finished with a 3.5 GPA, cumulative I would expect. I would Imagine the TAK is the least important factor here.

It's the high school exit exam in Texas. If you don't pass the four sections, you are not allowed to graduate no matter what your GPA is. One kid was quoted in yesterday's paper as saying: "That's what people go to high school for...to walk across the stage" No wonder they can't pass the damn test. His mom wants to sue Texas because he can't graduate and she has family coming in on non-refundable tickets... :disgust:

The bottom line is these kids (for whatever reason) can't pass a basic high school level competency/literacy test. Whether or not they attend a graduation ceremony is the least of their problems.

a 3.5 is the highest GPA out of that class? I did better than that and I was 37th in my graduating class.

It was the TAAS test before. And with a 3.5 GPA either her teachers are rigging her grades or she just didn't try in the least on the TAKS. That test was so easy it was pathetic.

Yep. Meaning you don't graduate. You don't gradute, you don't participate in the ceremony. Good for the school for stiking to the rules. If you don't meet the requirements for graduation, then no graduate.

Wait.... 3.5 GPA and she can't pass a skills test? What are they teaching 12th graders at a 6th grade level or something?

That sign is awesome.

These skill tests are crazy easy. Can you pick out a noun in a sentence? Add fractions together? Great, you pass.

IIRC, even my university allowed people to walk. Instead of a diploma, they got a piece of paper saying, to the effect of: "Not good enough, sucka."

I'm not sure if I should feel for her or not. I mean, obviously she's somewhat english-challenged, but at the same time those general assessment tests are worthless, at best.

Of-course, I remember blowing all my high-school tests (real tests and general assessment tests) out of the water without even studying or being half awake, maybe she's just an idiot?

Sounds right to me. The walk is for people who graduated to walk up and get their diplomas.
It's not a bloody gown pageant.

I suggest a compromise. They are allowed to walk, but they have to wear dunce caps.

Haha this is awesome. Totally agree with the school from banning these idiots from graduating. GPA's mean nothing because some schools just give students grades without them earning it, and this is what TAK and other standardize tests are for... to make sure the kids actually deserve to graduate. And point proven- if that girl can't even spell correctly on a sign, does she really deserve a diploma?

So many ways to boost a GPA... and a 3.5 isnt ANYTHING in high school. I'm glad those fools didnt pass. I'm pro-standardization. There should be national tests everyone has to pass in order to be a high school grad.

At least SATs and TAKs are standardized across the state or country. GPAs are completely dependent on each individual school.
