Tried it freshman year - same experience as many have posted here - just got too difficult so we broke it off. Personally, I avoid long distance relationships now.

I'm 50 miles from my girlfriend, but I see her every weekend or every other weekend, and I'll be 4 miles from her for a month in the winter, and three months in the summer. So not too hard. Just ask yourself if you want to be with her even though you won't be able to have that affection close by. For me, I couldn't see myself with any other person so I have no problem with making this work. You have to have trust.

My long distance relationship just ended. We we met in highschool, became great friends and started dating. We carried it through 2 years of college seeing eachother every second weekend or so. We were 3-4 hours apart. We recently ended it (last weekend), as our feelings for eachother have dwindled, and our careers are taking us in very different directions. We are remaining friends, and so far so good. We were together for 2.75 years.
As some of the others stated its just really hard, as when you see eachother it's great, but those weeks without her sucked. We would AIM and talk on the phone, but it just ended up being to much. It was either now, or later, and we both decided to not drag it out.
I think without the first 8 months together that this wouldn't have worked at all. I can see carrying a relationship for times of distance, but I can't see starting one with distance, you just can't build the foundation with weekends.

By all means I wish the best of luck to you though

I agree that the foundation is important before being far apart.

My finacee lives in Belguim, I live in Ottawa, we're on our 2nd year and she's moving here in 29 days. 11 of our 24 months have been spent apart, it only worked cuz I was working and could afford to visit her on a regular basis. Defintily something we are NEVER doing again.

My fiance lives 350+ miles away away from me (and has since we got together). It has been extremely difficult. I think I would rather have papercuts between my fingers doused with salt and lime than have to go through that again.

That said, I'm planning on moving there in about a month after we get married so the torture is almost over... (or has it just begun? )

Ditto. After awhile, you dread the drive more than you look forward to meeting someone. I also hated the fact that I couldn't do anything else the weekends where I saw her. It's not that I mind spending my entire weekend with her, but I would have rather gone out with her AND some friends.

I started to dread the drive as well. 225 miles 1 way on the most boring highway I know ... the NY Thruway. It really does start to taint the time we spent together because we each hated/dreaded the drive so much.
